Hello Betty. Ann and I are saddened by the news of Sheldon's death, and want to let you know that we join you, your family, and all the colleagues in celebrating the completion of his life. We'll always remember our fine times together working on LENS. Shel's capacity to build a positive relationship with all the participants was awesome. Others have spoken of his professional expertise and generosity, and we certainly agree. But mostly, it's the humor he brought to every situation, often transforming it from a mundane problem to a significant opportunity. Shel's humor addressed us and let us see that there's more to a situation than meets the eye. So we reckon that all the angels and archangels are having a good laugh with him now. We're grateful for the joy of being his colleague and will miss him. Grace & Peace John & Ann Epps .

Sheldon's Gifts

Betty & Family I was assigned to help prepare "EI's" exhibit for the World Council of Church's meeting in Detroit during the fall of 1969. Shel opened his office to our team at night so we could build his design. We were usually greeted with him laying out the work for the night then off he went on home. We would work until daybreak but we had to be back for daily office on the west side. He had drawn the design but it was not until we were in Detroit at the Conference setting it up that I saw it. It was a beautiful spire rising up from the floor at least 50 feet signaling the resurrection of the church in service. It was magnificent! Thanks Sheldon for creating art to represent our vision! Almost twenty years later, I had another chance to work with Sheldon. This time it was all about practical building projects. How do we automate the elevators and preserve the brass doors? What can we do about windows that are 40 feet by 23 feet? He always willing to look at all the options and consider multiple solutions. Betty Hill has asked me to inform everyone that Shel is in failing health and that his condition is declining rapidly. Her report about Shel being "okay with where he is," serves as a reminder to us all that acknowledging and affirming our real situation is at the heart of faith and well being. It is obvious Shel remains a spirit man and thereby lends courage to us all. They have repaired the hardware and are restoring from backup. Their estimated time of repair is later today, but I suggest everyone assume it is down through Monday. I have my eye on the situation. Dear Aimee, When the McGuire family moved to Fifth City in January, 1972, I was assigned to Emerging Generation. One particular task I remember was taking your little daughter to the Cook County Hospital emergency room with a throat infection. I don't know which of us was more overwhelmed. I hope I was kind and comforting, but am not at all sure of it. Frank was very kind and comforting on a development call in California in 1977, not long after we left the Symbolic Order. The colleague with him was Ray Spencer, I think. Fred was teaching, and I wasn't, so I went to lunch with the two men. Frank asked me, in the spirit of research on behalf of the Movement, to share why our family left. I replied that our children, two problematic adolescents and two younger sons, needed our attention. My deep denial kept Fred's alcoholism out of my conscious mind. I added with quivering voice that I felt our family had become more of a drain than an asset to the Order. Frank nodded and said, "I've had that feeling at times." Profound absolution washed over me. A great gift from a gracious soul. I'm sure many experienced him as a means of grace throughout his life. Aimee contacted Carol Pierce saying that Frank passed yesterday of a heart attack. They were at his Texas home. The funeral will be held there among his family friends perhaps as early as tomorrow.
