Salmon:A couple of stories

Paula--The print shop I remember was down the street very near the The boiler room in the basement brings another memory or two. When preparing myself for an internship in June of 1972, I traveled to Chicago on recruiting trips for Kansas Wesleyan University. Before that job was over, I recruited one young 5th Citizen college student who came and made a educational name for herself. Unfortunately, I have trouble remembering names. Sometimes I forget that I'm married to Betty Sue, that is another story. I planned to stay over the weekend at the seminary, and I arrived in the early evening to park on the street in my school car--a brand new Chevy Impala. I entered the building through the Guard Shack to a follow wearing a gun. Others were busy charting! Since it was Friday evening, everyone was eating everywhere, including on the floor upon the dirtiest carpet I ever saw. The food was good though--especially the bread pudding. Later, they took me to my room in the basement in what was the coal bin. They gave me two clear sheets and a pillow (I think that is what they called it). There being no light, it was iffy in getting everything put together. Reveille was the traditional gong and spiritual phrase. My first meeting was with an old friend from Kansas--a pastor (not Philbrook) who later left the Order to serve a church in the Chicago suburbs. Damn him! He crushed my bubble big time, and then later he ran out on me. He asked me what I was doing, and I gave him my report of working for Kansas Wesleyan and beginning the Kansas Lake Ministry at 4 Kansas lakes. He looked through me and said, "Too bad you are not doing enough!" "What do you mean," I stammered? "Is what you are doing global and replicable?" That sold me right there. The rest of the weekend is lost to memory except for the Sunday afternoon Sacramental meal. I remember some colleague saying a pray on some subject, and Joseph interrupted him by saying, (in effect), "Don't listen to him, God. He doesn't know what he is talking about." After that my only concern was if my car survived or not. It did! Do Guardian Angels exist? Naw, just raw luck. My other story about the basement is the first weekend of our internment. Beverly was assigned to paint the old gym, and I was assigned to Baby Care. I learn all about diaper songs, and feeding songs, and whatever else was necessary. Later, Marilyn and John Crocker were sent for the summer to India and we were put in charge of fairly new twins. Geez, they were identical and weighed in like football linemen. Carrying them up the stairs to the Crocker's apartment was a living chore. In order to keep them identified, I marked their initials on their foreheads with permanent markers--of course, this is what made them so diddly dern smart. Look at them know. The next time you see them, look closely at their foreheads. Ah, I have so many other stories to tell, and I'll get to it soon. One is the greeting we received in the seminary hall while our son, Wesley, was getting mugged by the children in the courtyard. Another, is why they told us that all that we brought with us would be left overnight in the middle of the street. Whatever was left over was what we really would need for the duration. It really is a shame that was more myth than reality. I'll save that one for later, including the one about Richard Epson--a real honest-to-goodness colleague who caught the vision of the print-shop significance. Final Status

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Colleagues, Not sure this is the right title for the email, but I wanted to share a few things as a wrap-up to my encounter with my serious health events. From here on its a matter of getting strength back and then heading back to Mexico from here in Kalispell Montana. First, I want to give official permission for all candles to be extinguished. Of course anyone who wants to keep one burning for my continuing enlightenment it is fine with me! What a great symbol that is within our community! It meant so much to me and I thank you. So many of you sent healing messages and Skype contacts. Bless you all! Secondly, I want to make sure everyone understands what happened and why recovery will be a journey. To use our language, the gallbladder attack was my problem, the contradiction was (is) the pancreas. Once David got me to the emergency room with my attack they where able to get the pain dealt with and they did blood tests and an MRI. Now both of the surgeons that worked on me later say that I should never have been allowed to leave the hospital. I had Pancreatitis (blood count of 50,000 vs normal 50). Pancreatitis was never mentioned to me. All I knew was that my pain was gone, I had discomfort in the belly, but thought the pain pills they prescribed would deal with it and when offered the choice to stay (and have the gallbladder removed) or go home I chose to go home to work out all that being gone would mean, Judy care etc. We were given no instructions as to what care I needed. So all the subsequent week was coming to terms with this new reality (no sleep, no eating, little liquid etc.). The next week started with the operation last Tuesday to remove the gallbladder and then hospital care to deal with the Pancreatitis (getting slight fever down, white count stabilized etc.) and then discharged on Sunday. My gallbladder surgeon said the first three rules they teach you as a surgeon are: 1. Do no unnecessary surgery 2. Always get a second opinion 3. Don't f--- with the pancreas! It is very serious illness and you can die from it if not treated. All news to me! Learnings from being in the hospital. Now other than being born I have never spent any time in a hospital. So all was pretty new to me and you all will sort of laugh at my naive ate. 1. If it hurts say so! They put the IV into the back of my left hand before my gallbladder surgery. There it stayed through numerous changes of drips, saline, antibiotics etc. Every time they changed bags they flush with saline and for about 4 seconds it would hurt like hell, which I thought was normal. After three days my hand and wrist began to hurt and were puffy. The nurse said we need to shift the IV, which they did to the right arm, on the inside of the elbow. No pain! The flush was getting under the skin, thus the pain. 2. Trust your body's intuition! When they started me on solids on Thursday I had a good breakfast and all was good. Lunch came and it was a piece of salmon on a bed of spinach. i took a bite and I was aware I didn't like the smell, but rather say anything or send it back for something else, I decided to eat it, for it did taste good. So one bite, two bites, some spinach and then bite three - followed by everything coming up! This spooked the doctor and I went back to liquids only. I am convinced that any other food would have been fine. Anyway, it was Saturday when I got to back to solids. 3. All situations are time for care. I realized that for the week I was in the hospital I would be being cared for and just receive it. But for me care is a two way street. I had a job of care for them as well. So over the week there were opportunities, some in the middle of the night, to have life conversations. Several had vocational and life altering possibilities. At least one relationship will continue. On the final trip out in the mandatory wheelchair I asked the nurse to thank the cleaning crew for their care and let them know how important it was to my recovery. She said "You can tell her yourself, here she is." coming down the hall with her cleaning cart. We stopped and I spoke to her for a couple of minutes about care, working without recognition, and how much I wanted her to know I appreciated her work. I grabbed her hand and I thought she was going to cry. So that's it. The wonderful care for me and Judy by the Scotts here in Montana continues. Now it is exercise, good no-fats food and getting strength and vitality back, take my meds and care again for Judy. I have one last request to you. I hope to be able to watch some good movies and would like your "don't miss" list. The only great movies I saw in the last year are "Lincoln" and "Life of Pi". Good News on Jack Gilles

I talked with Jack Gilles by Skype early this evening. As of this afternoon he is out of the hospital and back at the Scott's home. His fever is gone, his white blood cell count is ok, and the stone is gone as well. They did do a procedure where he was sedated to find the stone; but mysteriously it was no longer there. He said that when he woke up today he felt 200% better than the day before. As he recounted all he has gone through in the past two weeks, it is apparent that he had some close calls. In fact his doctor told him that it would take him several months to fully recover. But thankfully he is on the mend at this point. I told him I would send word out because there were many of you wondering what is happening at this point. Karen

Hi, everyone- Some of you are getting this because you are (my) family and close friends, interested in (my) comings and goings; others are getting this because you are anticipating an update about (our) good friend and ICA Colleague, Walter Epley. A Trailways Bus from Iowa deposited me in Denver this morning, having avoided flooded roads and damaged bridges in Colorado. The week-plus- long maneuver to help Walter Epley relocate back to his family farm in Iowa, including necessary packing*, loading*, moving by truck/trailer, unloading*, and returning (me) was hard but well-planned and went smoothly. * Many of Walt's family, as well as ICA Colleagues, participated in the packing, loading, and unloading portions of this very focused effort. Kudos to all. Walt is fortunate to have such an embracing nuclear and extended family. The 220-some acre family homestead is now his home again. He resides in a quaint 2-story cabin on the farm, owned by Walt's brother Steve Epley & Steve's wife Kathy, and located some quarter-mile from the home of Walt's sister Kaylene (Epley) Neal & husband Dick Neal.
