Hi friends and colleagues, My old and dear friend, David Allan, gave me permission to share the news of Patricia Allan-Clark's passing last month. I don't know the details around her death, but David clearly was shocked, so I assume it was not expected. While I didn't know Patricia well, we spent a couple of fun days together in Madrid when I was 21 and she was 23, following my year in Rome. A Little Help from my Friends (Pardon my Boldness)

Hi everyone! Please pardon my boldness in this message. I haven't been a regular productive contributor to conversations over the years. And I haven't made a request like this since our FOOD FOR ALL days of raising funds for anti-hunger projects. But I have started this GoFundMe campaign this holiday season and would like to ask for just a little help from my friends. Linda has been working tirelessly as a volunteer on a response to the climate crisis in our city and region. We were fortunate to have found Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action (ANCA) in Denver and got a serious boost working with them to get it going in our city. ANCA Redlands is now its own 501(c)(3) and less than three years old. Through support and collaborative efforts with our city, University, churches and all the local environmental groups, it has grown and has several exciting programs, from education to local action projects. Since I am approaching my 88th birthday next month and do not have the same activist energy I once had, I came up with this idea on my own to try to help ANCA Redlands at a critical point in its growing pains.This is all me and not Linda's idea. I am not assuming I have 1000 friends who could give $10 each, but I'm making this once in a lifetime appeal here and through social media to help toward our need for $10,000 for the next phase of growth. I still haven't seen the movie, but a few of us have. Here's my response to a private email from one colleague:Marshall D**, I'm guessing from your description that the screenplay was not the result of any in-depth study of Bonhoeffer's life or his theology. I bet the screenwriter didn't even bother to read Eberhard Bethge's biography.What I think he did is to create a cartoon Bonhoeffer character by superimposing the skeletal outline of Bonhoeffer's life onto a thriller movie framework.Leaving out the nuances and agonizing complexities of Bonhoeffer's ethical dilemmas as a pacifist.I'm not shocked that this cartoon version of Bonhoeffer has him wishing to "tear down the institutional church." I think the real Bonhoeffer's life was more profoundly nuanced than that kind of statement. His Life Together and The Cost of Discipleship were written while he supervised the underground seminary at Finkenwalde for students who were preparing to serve the dissenting Confessing Church that opposed the official German Church coalition that embraced Hitler. His focus on a "religionless Christianity" is a rejection of the 'smells and bells' and medieval belief system Luther inherited from Catholicism in favor of a radical immersion in the secular life of the world.And also a radical following of Jesus rather than middle class cultural norms.Something like the monastic life of seminary students at Finkenwalde. Or maybe the O:E. Although Bonhoeffer never abandoned his upper-class entitlement to a rich, privileged life. I believe that the real Dietrich was in love with his young student Eberhard, who was the beneficiary of his will. Dietrich reluctantly became engaged to marry the much younger Maria Von Wedemeyer only after her grandmother relentlessly pushed her on him and only after Eberhard got engaged to Dietrich's niece Renate.I don't get the sense that he was ever hot to make love with Maria. Perhaps their experience of 'true love' was always from an emotional distance, especially after Dietrich's arrest just three months after their announcement. There were letters and supervised visits. That's all.After both became engaged, Dietrich wrote to Eberhard, imagining that Now, we can resume our partnership, and we can travel together in those places where we found so much joy, and we can leave our wives back in Germany, in Berlin, or some place. In other words, they both acquired beards, and Dietrich longed to renew and pursue their spiritual friendship as 'soul mates' or whatever they decided to call it. But Eberhard was never willing to venture below the belt (as far as we can tell).I'm not at all sure that Dietrich was ever willing to go there, much as he may have longed to do just that. He wrote in prison that he would die a virgin.But since Eberhard's whole life was about Dietrich--especially as his martyred mentor and forever lost lover--how hard is it to understand the depth of his love in return?At least that's my version of Bonhoeffer. I rarely comment here on Bonhoeffer, but hey, I've been triggered by this new flick that I have yet to see!My very sharp-eyed, opinionated take on the new Bonhoeffer movie’s release date right after the election:Angel Studios bought the distribution rights and held the release of the film for a year until this weekend to take advantage of how Trumpism has aroused a passionate electorate, especially among evangelical Christians who have read the Metaxas biography Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy on which it is based.The election outcome was intended to be a ‘kicker’ to promote the movie. A Trump win would reinforce the “true believer” syndrome among Christian Nationalist Trump voters who could claim God’s blessing on a political victory that could justify their desire for “retribution” focused by the Metaxas' quote: “Biden is our Hitler”.A Trump loss could lead to the misuse of Bonhoeffer to justify armed violence—an outcome specifically rejected by the movie’s cast who object to the political use of a false analogy to Bonhoeffer’s life. Angel Studios also intends to attract some Christians to use the Bonhoeffer movie as their context to view Trump as “America’s Hitler” (in the words of J.D. Vance) or “the Anti-Christ” (in the words of Matthew Fox) and celebrate their ‘Christian’ victory over evil in case Trump lost.Or to justify protesting or resisting another Trump administration or even to justify further political violence or assassination attempts.Bottom line: Angel Studios appears to be exacerbating political divisiveness in the Christian community. As though they are more about profits than prophets.I enjoyed reading the Metaxas Bonhoeffer biography. Though I strongly object to Metaxas’ arrogant self-promotion among Christian Nationalists as a Bonhoeffer expert. As do ALL of the real Bonhoeffer scholars in academia.I’m obviously NOT a real Bonhoeffer scholar, though I did write a lot of theological papers on Bonhoeffer in the seminary where he paced the halls while making his fateful decision to leave his American ‘safe harbor’ and return to Nazi Germany in 1939.I gave up on the idea of making THE Bonhoeffer movie myself after another filmmaker made a documentary about Bonhoeffer’s life in 1984.Here’s what Wikipedia says about the new Bonhoeffer film:“Bonhoeffer caused controversy before its release. In addition to numerous historical inaccuracies and misleading marketing, the film was accused of promoting viewpoints of the Christian right."Descendants of Dietrich Bonhoeffer distanced themselves from the film.”Further, “In the German weekly Die Zeit, experts on Bonhoeffer, including presidents of the International Bonhoeffer Society and the publishers of Bonhoeffer's work in German and English, accuse the movie of abusing Bonhoeffer's life in order to promote Christian Nationalism. The film's slogan, ‘How far will you go to stand up for what's right?’, is not a question Bonhoeffer asked, they write.
