A Really Happy Thanksgiving!

It has only been about nine months since my last post of my "memoirs." But as the Eagles said on the occasion of their reunion in 1994: "We never broke up, we just took a 14 year vacation." Similarly, I never stopped writing, I just took a 9 month sabbatical. Methodist Bishop Jim Mathews, in his later years, always started his addresses with: "I'm really glad to be here-at my age I'm glad to be anywhere." Likewise, with all that has been happening around here (the world), I am just happy and thankful to be here an able to write this Thanksgiving greeting. The two episodes you can read if you wish (they are only a couple of pages in length) is titled Participation Works-Really! and The Technology of Participation. They reference Linda and my venture into a decade plus of a home-based business in facilitation and training, using the skills and methods we learned while with the Institute of Cultural Affairs. It was a grand ride and we have often wondered what our government might look like if its members had these skills and methods. We can dream can't we? Posted by my friend Mia Beale. Jann John BraveBull 9 hrs · I'm sure you're reading a lot of stories about tonight... here's mine. I woke up in Rapid City, refreshed and bound for Standing Rock. It was a good day. I needed a break so I took a couple days. As we traveled north the mood got somber. We live on edge there, fear some where deep inside the brain things are going to get bad. Tonight they did. As we crossed the border onto our reservation the live feeds of an action started chirping in our notifications. They were from a distance and all we could hear was chaos. So I stopped at moms to tell her I loved her and that I was going to the front. Not to worry cause I heard it was a prayer gathering and I'd be home soon. We met at the casino and geared up. As I gathered goggles and face shields I was a little embarrassed that I was going to be over dressed for a prayer... but I didn't know what I was walking into. I wanted it to be just a prayer circle but I was hearing whispers it was so much more. Oh shit. After we parked and headed to the bridge, people were being walked out with injuries. Where are my friends? Just turn around John but we both know I can't. First person I saw was Tito, he gave me an update as I watched the police spray a water cannon into the crowd in sub freezing weather after dark. He said tear gas and my focus was back on him. What the... no words. I choked up. I got scared and then I shook it off cause it was time to go to work. I could see people hurt and needing help. Chad Charlie... damn good to see his face. We caught up and watched. Watched as tear gas containers exploded mid air raining down smoking fragments that were still burning. Watching as people were being soaked with a water cannon. Shots. Some one was hit we ran to her scooped her into our arms and ran her back to medics. This was our role for the next five hours, pulling about forty people out. Some cause of shock. Some cause of breathing issues from the gas. Some just because they needed someone to tell them it was ok to pull back. Five will stay with me forever. The first was a young lady that was unconscious as we carried her. I didn't even realize she was out. I hope she is ok. I worry for her family. The second was a lady that was shot in the leg and told us she was ok as we carried her out and that she didn't want to take away from some one who needed help. As we carried her the crowd in front of us flinched and looked like they were watching a foul ball. We stopped, crouched down and protected her as a tear gas canister blew up behind and above us and we both got hit in the shoulders. Instant anger in both of us but we had to get this lady to a transport so we kept going. The third was a young man shot in the back. Before that happened though I caught a ricochet that hit me in the hip and was grazed with another behind the knee. I was pissed and marched up to the line to find out who the fuck shot me... but I couldn't walk so good. So Chad pulled me back and this young man had been hit square in the kidney so we picked him up and carried him out. The fourth was a man whose arm was broken being walked out by my friend Charlie Plenty Wolf and was in complete shock. We had trouble getting him to a vehicle to get him to the E.R. The trauma in his eyes... the fifth and most haunting was a man who was shot down below on the western line. We jumped the guardrail and ran down the hill to extract him. He was yelling at the cops who shot him. Holding them accountable and refusing to leave. They shot a shield as we were trying to take him out and my left eye stung. We literally pulled this man up the hill and over the guardrail when we realized he was shot on the top of his head and bleeding. Chad demanded he go to medics but he refused. I looked into his eyes and told him he was shot in the fucking head. Four of us carried him out. As the medics took over I washed his blood off my hands. Think about that. I'm standing on the prairie in the freezing cold, wet and hurting washing a mans blood off my hands. Oh shit I remembered I got hit in the eye. Medic!!! A lady named Victory took care of me. Something was in there but they got it out. So so much more shit happened tonight but that's all I got right now. Except that Chad never left my side. That's important for you to know cause we didn't know each other four months ago and we had each other's backs like we were childhood friends. Johnny, Načá Wakíš'aka Wiŋ and Khannie were our base camp taking care of us as we needed all night. I felt like I was putting them in harms way though and I can't shake that.

Thanks for all the birthday greetings which I got because Brother Wiegel outed me <grin!> I am 70, so I can now ride the bus and light rail in Houston for free, and am now starting social security as late as possible, a bet about longevity, we shall see how that works out. I shall continue to keep these lists going because they seems to (mostly) work for our aging community despite the old technology,. Let me add that if you are not sorting your incoming mail for the lists, all the discussion might be a bit overwhelming. I have configured mine so all the OE goes to an OE folder, all the dialogue goes to a dialogue folder, and so the discussion does not clog my inbox. By this means sanity is preserved. I can't help individuals do this because it's just too much, so I suggest recruiting your great grandkids to help. Or try googling "sort email gmail", replacing "gmail" with your email provider. Believe me, this is worth a few hours of your time. Tim

I have complied a comb-bound book of the Solitary Office with daily Propers for an entire year. The book has a short Foreword, Preface of definitions, etc., etc.., The daily readings are those complied from circa 1972, College and Summer program selections. Suggestions for using the SO as a daily discipline and extending one’s personal reflections and responses are included. My intention was to use the book as gifts to friends or colleagues. I do not claim authorship...only as a compiler of EI/OE research. QUESTION: What are the copyright issues involved, if any? Should I request an ICA imprimatur? Rod Rippel

The Divided States of America – Will We, as a Nation, Continue to Stand? by Michele Stopera Freyhauf BY MICHELE STOPERA FREYHAUF on NOVEMBER 20, 2016 • ( 2 ) 1 Vote If you are like me, you are still reeling from the election results in the United States – trying to make sense of it, while at the same time going through the steps of mourning. As I write this, it is difficult to call our country United – because it is anything but. In reality, we have become the Divided States of America – and worse, we have had friendships lost and detachments with relatives over this election. And I guess I could say, what’s even worse – we learned about the bigotry and viewpoints of people we used to consider friends or even learned this about family members, even spouses. When one mourns, it is to cope, heal, and to express the loss of love. However, I think we should stop or never approach the final stage of acceptance; rather, I think we need to be vigilant. Back in the early 1930s, there was a person considered to be powerful and charismatic, and much like Trump, beyond reproach. Hungering for change, a promise was made to the disenfranchised for a better life and to make the country glorious (or great). Even with losing about 2 million votes from the previous election in July 1932 (a number that ironically is the estimated spread of popular votes Hillary won over her opponent), a coalition with Conservatives was made in January 1933, a man named Adolf Hitler was named Chancellor – head of the German Government – the proclaimed savior of a nation. Racism and authoritarian ideas, basic freedoms were abolished, forcing parties into goals, abolishing trade unions – the world saw the move from democracy to a dictatorship and the loss of privacy and use of terror used to achieve goals became the new norm. Am I trying to be an alarmist, no, but I am calling for vigilance. Part of the work I do requires me to read Nazi Era unclassified briefings, which often include government briefings, letters of victims, and correspondence between different businesses. As I read through these documents, my mind continues to move back to the election. The fear, the desperation, and the destruction – you gain an insight from primary source documents that help you experience the fear of the oppressed. There are so many similarities between that election and Hilter’s rise to power, that we must stay vigilant. So here we sit, a divided nation that has blamed racial divide on our first African American Click here to link to the original picture President, as well as a congress that has denied the President the ability to fulfill an almost 1-year vacancy in the Supreme Court, played bipartisan games giving the illusion that Obamacare and other policies were substandard and denying that they were bastardized by bipartisan disagreements and politics. Then there are interference of the FBI, voter fraud allegations and lost ballots, the appointment of power-mongering racist career politicians that seem to remain at the bottom of that drained swamp that we have heard so much about, and the blatant allegations of fraud and wrongdoing – all of which continue to be ignored and overlooked. Some will go so far as to say that this is for the betterment of the country. I don’t have to tell you that I adamantly disagree – this country, before the election tore it apart, was already great – and we were in a time of measurable growth – the first time in a long time. The “reality show” rhetoric with a string of already broken promises have been discounted and justified as a means to an end. We as a nation stand abhorrently divided – and that is a problem. We have racial violence and religious bigotry spilling into our elementary schools, universities, churches, and communities. We have parades by the KKK, interference with foreign governments, and the rhetoric of registries, walls, and camps – is this really the State of our Union? We must never forget that at one time, in a not so distant past, it was our differences that united us – that is what made (or makes) our country great. It was our quest to have a safe space to practice or not practice our faith; celebrate the traditions of our homeland while learning about others; in this, the United States of America, differences were welcome and embraced. We need to recall Mark 3:25: “and if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.” In other words, for the country to move forward, we must find a way to come together, heal, and be united so that the history of the 1930’s does not repeat itself. We need to be a better stronger nation – leaving the world better for the next generation. With someone who does not believe in global warming and feels that since we have nuclear weapons, why not use them – will there even be a world left for my children and grandchildren? Michele Stopera Freyhauf is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies and a Member of the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University as well as an Instructor at John Carroll University’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies. Her research and areas of focus for the classroom, lecture, and publication are Religion, Cultural Identity and Memory Studies, Forced Migration and Exile, Cultural Heritage and Human Rights, Biblical Archaeology, Provenance of Antiquities and Art (including Nazi-Era Looting) and international dialogue surrounding the protection, conservation, and education of cultural heritage. Michele has an M. A. in Theology and Religious Studies from John Carroll University, and did post-graduate work at the University of Akron in the area of History of Religion, Gender, and Sexuality. She is also the student representative on the Board for Eastern Great Lakes Biblical Society (EGLBS). Michele is the 2015 recipient of the P. E. MacAllister Excavation Fellowship where she participated in the Bethsaida Archaeology Project. Michele is a feminist scholar, activist, and author of several articles including “Hagia Sophia: Political and Religious Symbolism in Stones and Spolia” and lectured during the Commission for the Status of Women at the United Nations (2013 and 2014). She also wrote “The Catholic Church and Social Media: Embracing [Fighting] a Feminist Ideological Theo-Ethical Discourse and Discursive Activism” that appears in Feminism and Religion in the 21st Century: Technology, Dialogue, and Expanding Borders, edited by Gina Messina-Dysert and Rosemary Radford Ruether.
