Happy Thanksgiving. Here’s a little history about the day. "The First Thanksgiving The first thanksgiving feast was celebrated in 1621 by the pilgrims of the Plymouth colony along with about ninety Indians. The Pilgrims had suffered through a devastating winter in which nearly half their number died. Without the help of the Indians, all would have perished. After the first harvest, Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and prayer to God. The food, which was eaten outdoors, included corn, geese, turkeys, ducks, clams, plums, cod, bass, barley, venison and corn bread. The feast lasted 3 days, races and other games were played during the celebration. Though the exact date is unknown, the feast clearly took place in late autumn. In 1623, a period of drought was answered by colonists with a proclamation of prayer and fasting. This prayer and fasting was changed to another thanksgiving celebration when rains came during the prayers. Later that year, Governor Bradford proclaimed November 29 as a time for pilgrims to gather and give thanks. “Inasmuch as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, squashes and garden vegetables, and made the forest to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as he has protected us from the ravages of the savages, has spared us from the pestilence and granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience. Now I, your magistrate do proclaim that all ye Pilgrims, with your wives and ye little ones, do gather at ye meeting house, on ye hill, between the hours of nine and twelve in the daytime on Thursday, November ye 29th, of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and twenty-three, and the third year since ye Pilgrims landed on ye Plymouth Rock, there to listen to ye Pastor and render Thanksgiving to ye Almighty God for all his blessings.” – Governor Bradford November 29, 1623 Throughout American history, there were many thanksgiving proclamations and celebrations. In 1789 George Washington proclaimed a National Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday in November, in honor of the new United States Constitution. Thomas Jefferson, the third president, later discontinued it, calling it “a kingly practice.” But in 1863, Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of the poem “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” convinced Abraham Lincoln to proclaim Thanksgiving a national holiday. For the date she chose the last Thursday in November because of Washington’s proclamation. In 1941, it was officially changed to the fourth Thursday in November.” And the Mayflower Compact - we used to read at Thanksgiving. THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT "In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, e&.Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.In Witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord, King James of England, France and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth. Anno Domini, 1620." There followed the signatures of 41 of the 102 passengers, 37 of whom were members of the "Separatists" who were fleeing religious persecution in Europe. This compact established the first basis in the new world for written laws. Ferguson

Dear Friends, Here in the Ferguson area, post-Grand Jury announcement, we are waking up, if we went to sleep at all, to a very gray day after a very sad, fire-lit night, to the continuing whirl of the helicopter which started before the announcement. Some clergy are marching to shut down Clayton. Some are leading vigils. Some are starting to clean up Ferguson and other places. Some are working to keep safe places open and provide food and study places for children out of school. Last night we watched on TV the looting and burning of Ferguson and Dellwood and other places. We could see two of the fires from our house while smoke spiraled upward and whitened the night sky and blanketed the cold earth with ashen manna. Now the National Guard is on the scene. Too little, too late, too many questions, too much anger, too much destruction, too much division, too many hearts broken and weeping, too many of the same century's long issues ahead of us to address as a community and nation, too much healing needed. But also, too many people working for justice, too many souls not giving up. The phoenix is shaking the ashes off its feathers and eventually will rise. Ellie Stock elliestock(a)aol.com

E1T2 In the Philippines, we threw around acronyms. "US" (You Ess) instead of the UnitedStates was common; "YM/WCA" was never The Young Men's/Women'sChristian Association. It was simply the"Y"! PK was "Pastor's kid" to those of us who grew upin a parsonage, until I heard one in China litter his discourse with"pk". He was unable to explainit fully on inquiry. It turned out itmeant like "vs", the "point kick" when football teamssettle a tie! So I coined E1T2 for "Each One Teach Two", aslogan in my Oral English classes that I coined from Rutgers University literacyteacher Lucille Chagnon's book, Each ofyou, Teach Two. She improves on FrankLaubach's "each one teach one" literacy method. (Google TeachTwo for a methods' conversation.) Most of my generation remembers C-3PO (See-three-Pee-Oh), adroid programmed for etiquette and protocol in the movie series Star Wars built by the character JediAnakin Skywalker to accompany astromech R2-D2. Today, G3 smartphones are in everyone's hand. Droids and androids are no longer foreign to many of us,Droid being a font in the smartphone OS (operating system) Android that Samsunguses to compete with the iPhone. I am adinosaur among the techy crowd, having forsaken TV and the phone in Saipanwhere their use was irrelevant, and a nuisance. With technology replacing human physiology, however, we can't afford todiscard knowledge of how humans "naturally" behave as many of ourfunctions are increasingly getting automated. I am an oldie. Istill remember Harrison Ford's swagger, Mark Hamill's live juvenile innocence, withCarrie Fisher tugging at our testosterone in the first Star Wars, but I did not come out a Sci-Fi groupie. The artform, however, was appropriated byover zealous religious nuts to promote their favored metaphysical themes. We went into time travel, back to the future,or are constantly time travelling! The term E1T2 is handy but only for ease of memory ratherthan adding to the long list of shortened long names and phrases. I've written enough of the methodology behindTeachTwo, Imaginal Education andTraining to say that nothing is esoteric about it. It follows the standard grasp of the way humans learn andexpress in words and numbers ideas and thoughts, often not naturally followed inour haste to arrive and promote "meaningful" cultural way of"knowing". Pedagogy tends to short-circuitthe process by hurrying to the cognitive level (significance) without botheringto clarify indicative and subjunctive levels. It stops at meaning (ah, but the cognition is ever rich and alluring) withoutpushing for the "so what?" that invites imperative action. OK. I lost youthere. Briefly, our brains iteratively startat sense experience (see, hear, smell, taste, touch), to emotional response(feelings), then intellectual ideas (thoughts and categories) resulting inbehavioral pattern (acts and deeds). TheEnglish language labels moods in the indicative, subjunctive, andimperative. I include cognitive as athird one before the imperative, to differentiate emotion and intellect. Others use ORID: the objective, the reflective,the interpretive and the decisional. These four main categories are basic and indisputable though oneunderstands that they are about one thing regardless of their iteration intheir expression, e.g. one can begin with the emotive but insures that theexperience is clear so that meaning and subsequent deeds are understood. We all share in the academic bias of listening to an expert"who knows more than we do", and we in turn act the same toothers. Expertise is measured by onionskins,selfhood on the thickness of wallet, but the truth that journeys our existenceis determined by awake individual and not by passing standard tests. In fact, my pedagogical circle does not codifywisdom encrusted in time-honored categories but rather teach others to teach themselves,effectively and efficiently together. That's the gift of Chagnon and E1T2. The method teaches a pair or trio to beself-taught by knowing how one learns, getting one to be aware of it, and havethe confidence to employ it. "Self-consciousness"and the skill of "consciousness of consciousness" are the fancy namesbut we will stick with "learning how to learn" and "knowing whatwe know". For two hours on Monday and Thursday evenings, I conversewith those who wish to finesse their oral English around the Ocean View room ofthe Bass Bar in my neighborhood. Ourtalk is heavy on "listen and repeat". I ask them to mimic an English song they like and get them to echo thesinger's pronunciation and not worry about meaning. We ground them at the five-sense experiencelevel. I meet administrative personnel at the "OneCapitol" Hui Land Corporation (owned by Jardine of Hong Kong so staffwelcomes English tutorials) on Saturday afternoons to do the same. I dream methods and enjoin others in the dreaming. Achievement is in the actual doing. E1T2 is easy. The Good Earth Pearl Buck's novel, TheGood Earth, is one of her trilogy written in the 30s referring to the richsoil in China's river plains. We nowbrush into the ever-present particle that clings to clothes and fills the airin the northeast: dust. Growing up in a rainforest coastal town in the Philippinesmeant verdant fields. A speck of dust wasan intruder, the presence of its kind an indication of a duster's lethargy not abundance. With the accelerated cutting of trees from the forest came stirreddust twice a day from passenger buses that plied the Aparri-Laoag traffic. Soon, dust was no longer a benign stranger tobe gently nudged out but an enemy to be banished, belligerently guardedfrom. Their tribe multiplied with thelogging trucks. Unless the rains failed to arrive as scheduled, Aparri's dustdrenched with the sand. We were a deltaat the mouth of the Cagayan River and the sand was more plentiful than theirairborne cousins. Still, I developed theobsession of dusting while I grew older. I tolerated or fought the dust, depending which nook of the planet I wasin, tolerating it in Saipan where one mostly grabbed the hankie while inhaling dustat the motorbike races north of Banzai Cliff. It was in Kano, Nigeria where I was overwhelmed by dust inthe air, confronted for the first time by a humongous sand storm from theSahara forcing our Lagos-bound plane to prematurely land. I ended up in Ijede by the Lagos Lagoon so Ilearned to tolerate the soil as part of the scenery rather as grime. Specks of soil were my first nemesis in Dong Bei, not because they were present but because they weretolerated everywhere. And, yes, it iseverywhere. I lived for three years ending last year on the 11thfloor of SAU's Friendship Villa where the faculty and staff of the InternationalEducation College were located and where foreigners are billeted. For the absence of a northern sun in the roomassigned to me, I went for a south-facing room that received the sun all yearround. A mistake. It also faced a four-lane street to thecoal-littered grounds of the steam generating plant across, with swirling dust on the uplift of the Siberian winds that sweptdown Manchuria's plains. Spoiled for the adequacy of University heat and water, I wastolerant of the outside dust as long as I had it under control in my room. A wet mop was a constant, never far fromperiodic touches to the floor and accumulations in ends and corners got thereach of hand rugs. The PMI (particulate matter index) alert is quite literally anothermatter! When I moved off-campus, I realized how valuable the water wasand how the dust is taken for granted in peoples' daily lives. My solarium plants drown in H20; myneighbor's are misted. My plants are robustwhile the neighbor's are like bonsai. Shefavors plants that require little dampness. Half of her garden grows cacti. Myspider plants with a taro and a few florae bearing white flowers that bloom inthe morning and pink in the evening join crawling vines next to the laundryline while bell peppers droop their branches. I germinate durian seeds in the cold! My neighbor washes clothes and utensils on the sidewalk. She uses the water well before it is thrownout into the street to settle the dust on the ground. Sponged bath gets the children cleaned, withliberal use of wash clothes applied to strategic lymph nodes to insure hygiene. I've since learned how to handle water, the kitchen faucets nolonger continuously heard running; ditto on shower spouts. I also discovered why the toilet bowl doesnot hold standing water; one does not flush in doing number three. It goes down by gravity! My host family's home near downtown Shenyang proved to be a painfulvenue of an unforgettable learning occasion. The host Mama went out to the store after a festive meal while the housePapa snored in bed, so I had the kitchen to myself. I did my hosts a favor, dusting off the piledChinese cabbage, washed the carrots, potatoes, and radishes on the kitchensolarium. A mistake. It turned out the soil delayed the veggiesrotting, absorbing the dampness as it dried, giving it the protective cover neededrather than the rapid wrinkling of the skin exposed to air after cleaned. Dust bugged me in San Jose at Oleai. That was benign compared to the PMI that alarmsDong Bei lungs. Temperature feels cold evenunder sunshine compared to the greenhouse effect of smog that retains atmosphericheat in the overcast skies; this welcomed paradox goes with the facemask. Host mother lost cover protection of thecabbage outer leaves, and the carrot-potato-radish aged faster due to mydust-phobia. Turkey and pumpkin are in American tables tomorrow, started ina rite of gratitude for the Good Earth's bounty when Massachusetts’s indigenes andPilgrim neighbors feasted on the fruits of the New England soil. I know it takes a lot of commitment to succeed, having facilitated planning sessions for a group that wanted to create the "Real World charter school" and has since quit planning.
