The service was held on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Burke Mountain Academy in East Burke, VT, longtime home of Peter, his wife Carol, and daughters Maya and Joleil. Joining Anna and Dick Stanley, and of course Ken and Clare Whitney, Joe and I represented the OE “first generation.” I would like to offer this as an initial reflection, trusting that members of our “second generation” will have much more to share with video and digital photos documenting this amazing event. We didn’t know Peter as well as we had, in the past, many of his close OE contemporaries who were participants in the celebration – Keith Boivin, Nancy Griffin, Brad Grow, Brenda Johnson, Andy St. Clair, Denise and Rick Stanley and Pete’s bro, Mark. But yes, we came to know him more recently -- probably lots through his parents Ken and Clare, dear friends since the early days of the Movement in New England, who, more recently, often stayed with us in ME en route to their regular visits to East Burke, VT. Nevertheless, I’m guessing all of the 300 or so people gathered at Burke Mountain Academy, like us, learned much more about this unique and unrepeatable bundle of energy, love, commitment, passion and care that is Peter Adams Whitney’s continuing gift to life itself. As affirmed by those who eloquently offered words of remembrance in the service, Peter’s legacy lives on in the powerful, positive influence of his life on everyone in attendance. We learned Peter’s legacy is one that speaks on behalf of justice and civic responsibility in the community, especially in support of ethical practices in the public sector workplace; that advocates for and leads the authentic, creative engagement of youth in sports, arts, drama; that adamantly insists upon consistent loving relationships with family and friends; that rejoices in the beauty of the natural world and urges living gently on planet earth; and that invites profound enjoyment of LIFE itself, just as it is. I am attaching a part of the celebration program – the liturgy Peter Whitney and his childhood friend Peter Johnston, liturgist for the service, created together. Giants of our "industry"

First, Barbara who, like Kaze, stands in my memory as one of the foremost pioneers of imaginal education; giants whose care and intensity trained another generation of educators. Then Georgiana, who simply lived life LARGE - such gusto carried many of us as we would flag near the end of a long and incomplete assignment. And Tony, the gentle giant - it's his smile I remember most. There's a popular song that says, "Red Solo cup, I fill you up. Let's have a party; proceed to party!" I hear it playing as these three giants enter (metaphorically) the pearly gates. Justin and I are so very glad to hear this. We really love Georgianna, and on the few occasions we went to California to see our daughter, we always made sure we stopped in to see her - always the gracious lady, and we worried whenever we heard of fires in the Malibu area - more than she did, herself. May her journey "home" be peaceful and easy. Linda and I went ahead to open the house in Malibu and move some furniture to make room for the delivery of a bed and medical supplies and wait for the ambulance to arrive with Georgianna and Jana. Georgianna has been surrounded by three nurses around the clock for some months now. We call them St. Theresa, St. Maria, and St. Rosa, from El Salvador and Mexico. Her first home hospice nurse is from Ethiopa. This is fitting for Georgianna is truly a "global citizen." Georgianna arrived home about 5:30 on Saturday, transported by two caring paramedics who along with Jana and Holly, lifted their Mom onto a stretcher for the trip up the stairs to the living room. Georgianna made the trip just fine and has been at rest at home since. Son John arrived from Denmark Sunday night. Jana told us that she gave her Mom a bath and did her nails. Linda and I have been privileged to be "adopted" as though part of the family and considered by Georgianna so as she told us many times. But then we believe that she told many of you the same through the years. She was with us through the entire 13 years of the FOOD FOR ALL project, which still continues in one form or another, just as many of the ICA projects she worked on have continued in one form or another. We await news which we will pass on. It should not be much longer. But Georgianna is already "at home" and surrounded by a universe of compassion and love. Linda and I spent last Friday night at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica, reading to Georgianna all the emails that were pouring in, playing some Enya songs, and singing softly "Those Who Wait on the Lord" suggested by some of our colleagues. Georgianna was in a coma, but they say the last thing to go is the hearing. Daughter Jana arrived from Northern California Saturday morning and Holly a little after Noon. Dear Jon, I did not know either your Mother or Father personally and only occasionally bumped into them, yet have a "feel" for their lives through stories. Tonight, when looking at portraits painted by Paul Noah, as he is going through his painting archives, there were portraits of both your Mother and Father. They give a pictorial "voice" to the experiences people have shared on the listserv. Blessings to you and your family as you honor your Dad's completed life. Marge's 85th birthday party was held today at 4750 with many people in attendance. A donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent a contribution to ICA-USA for $8,500 (eight thousand five hundred dollars) with some specific instructions. To celebrate her eighty-fifth year, Marge is to designate portions of this $8,500 contribution, in amounts as she sees fit, to the seven major current program areas at ICA-USA. >From Pat Alerding Horgan (Bill Alerding's sister): The memorial service for Barbara is being held on Friday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Robin Run Village, 5354 West 62nd Street, Indianapolis, In. 46268. We hope to have a small memorial mass here in Connecticut for family and friends in late August. We have not made those arrangements yet. Thank you for your help in letting ICA friends know.
