If you are anything like me, you can barely remember having ever felt so stunned, and doomed, except when someone very close to you died, or divorced you, or the godawful biopsy results came back.It’s a little as if the godawful biopsy results came back, and 73 million people cheered and gloated. So, yes, definitely, this is not ideal. We are in for a dark and scary ride. My response to crisis and the end of the world has always been to figure out whom to blame, how to numb the pain, and how to fix miserable realities. I have not been having much luck with any of these. Reality seems nauseatingly real. We got skunked, but good.We can’t even blame it on the electoral college this time. I hate that.I don’t know. God, do I not know. I majorly megatron do not know. So at first that might seem like the end of the discussion, but if you listen to my personal husband, Neal, that’s actually the beginning.“I don’t know,” he suggests, is the portal to freedom. I was raised by atheist intellectuals, and my parents’ solution to everything was to know. To figure it out. But when Neal’s clients are being badgered by themselves or family to answer a difficult question or challenge, he teaches them to say, “I don’t know.” It opens up possibilities. This gives us a shot at being curious, rather than certain, which is a dead end. Paul Tillich wrote that the opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainty. I am a jello mold of uncertainty right now, with horrible shredded carrots in it. I don’t know how things are going to shake down, except that #47 will almost certainly destroy the economy with his tariffs and tax cuts for the very rich and corporations, and then the plates of the earth will shift again. I don’t know what we do next, although I am going to take a walk and a nap at some point today, take care of people who are really suffering, and get everyone a glass of water. Why aren’t I freaking out more? I don’t know. I just believe in goodness, radical self care, and that grace bats last. So sue me.Also that more will be revealed. We’ve only been in this new reality for a few days. When Chou En Lai, the first premier of China, was asked his thoughts on the French Revolution, he took drag on his Gauloise (bleu) and answered, “Too soon to tell.”Wednesday, a pundit whom I respect tweeted that the resistance seemed muted. I loved this: It had been ten hours since we lost.But when? I don’t know. Beginning with what? I don’t know. How do we keep the faith in goodness? I don’t know. We just do.What happened Tuesday had been in the works for years but we weren’t paying attention or couldn’t quite believe it. Jung said, “What we don’t bring to consciousness, comes to us as fate. And we need—eventually—to take a look at that. Not today.Today? We take care of ourselves and those we love. We always, always take care of the poor, with donations, or bags of groceries to local food pantries. We get outside: Wednesday morning, at 7:00, Neal suggested we take a walk. This was the last thing I wanted to do, but I headed out beside him and our spiritual service dog. After ten minutes or so, I said grimly, “This was not a good idea.” Everything was too intense and real. I felt like a burn victim. Then ten minutes later, I began to see beauty all around me, in nature and neighbors, and our good dog. When I noticed how droplets sparkled amid grass stems, it helped me begin to breathe again. Left foot, right foot, left foot, breeeeeathe: this, and kindness, are all we need to know right now; today. I send you my best love and a big hug. You are all so amazing to me. Rebecca Solnit wrote on x.com: They want you to feel powerless and to surrender and to let them trample everything and you are not going to let them. You are not giving up, and neither am I. The fact that we cannot save everything does not mean we cannot save anything and everything we can save is worth saving. You may need to grieve or scream or take time off, but you have a role no matter what, and right now good friends and good principles are worth gathering in. Remember what you love. Remember what loves you. Remember in this tide of hate what love is. The pain you feel is because of what you love. The Wobblies used to say don't mourn, organize, but you can do both at once and you don't have to organize right away in this moment of furious mourning. You can be heartbroken or furious or both at once; you can scream in your car or on a cliff; you can also get up tomorrow and water the flowerpots and call someone who's upset and check your equipment for going onward. A lot of us are going to come under direct attack, and a lot of us are going to resist by building solidarity and sanctuary. Gather up your resources, the metaphysical ones that are heart and soul and care, as well as the practical ones. People kept the faith in the dictatorships of South America in the 1970s and 1980s, in the East Bloc countries and the USSR, women are protesting right now in Iran and people there are writing poetry. There is no alternative to persevering, and that does not require you to feel good. You can keep walking whether it's sunny or raining. Take care of yourself and remember that taking care of something else is an important part of taking care of yourself, because you are interwoven with the ten trillion things in this single garment of destiny that has been stained and torn, but is still being woven and mended and washed. It is called We Were Made For These Times: 10 Lessons for MovingThrough Change, Loss, and Disruption. | | Its author is Kaira Jewel Lingo who was a nun in Thich Nhat Hanh’s Buddhist community for 16 years. Her reflections are drawn from that tradition, but she also includes teachings from Meister Eckhart and Thomas Merton and other Christian mystics. | | | | | | | | | Kaira Jewel Lingo introduces her book, Ten Lessons in Moving through Change, Loss, and Disruption. Watch her series of 10 lessons, companion to the book, HERE. | | Kaira Jewel is African American and her father was a minister who worked with Dr. King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He became a “devoted student of Thich Nhat Hahn” and was ordained a Buddhist Dharma teacher in 2008. She cites her father: When we see ourselves as victims, that is the separate self. When we see ourselves as beloved, that is no-self. In the name of transparency, I confess that Kaira Jewel is a friend of mine now and she married my good friend Adam Bucko, with whom I co-authored the book, Occupy Spirituality: A Radical Vision For a New Generation, and who is an Episcopal priest in the diocese of Long Island. One hopes we can rise to the challenge and develop both the deep spirituality and the smart and savvy political consciousness that can turn this lemon into lemonade. That we can participate in a re-doing of democracy and how we do it and put the brakes onclimate denial and appeals to hatred and vengeance and stand up to an utterly corrupt and compromised unsupreme court and senate and media and bogus religion and value-free education and more. | | One argument that we are “made for these times” is this: We are here. Each of us was born in these times of moving from modern to post-modern, from the age of Pisces to the age of Aquarius, from a time of religion to a time of spirituality. The fact that we are here is a pretty good argument that we are made for these times. | | | | | | | | | “What (Republicans) want least…is to realize that half the country went to bed sad…and woke up…fired up with a new sense of purpose.” Rachel Maddow affirms that today’s Americans were made for these times. MSNBC | | Joanna Macy, in her 90’s, attended a meeting I was part of a few years ago and when handed the microphone, said: Isn’t it wonderful that we are alive at this critical time for planet Earth and our species? What a privilege to be so chosen. All of us. Tomorrow we will share someuseful practices from Kaira Jewel for dealing with our grief and empowering us for the tasks ahead. Colleagues, I visited with Janelle Dove by phone today and learned that Mark’s memorial service was on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqi0 LdHWd4<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqi0%20LdHWd4> John and I have just watched it and were honored to be present in this virtual way. The service was at Friendship Village in Dublin, OH where they have been part of the community for a number of years. Although they considered having the service in one of the churches that Mark helped start, it had been 25 years ago and probably no one there would have known him, so they chose his more recent community. The officiant, Rev. Susan Kiser, was one of Mark’s student pastors in his early ministry, who spoke of the trust and confidence Mark placed in her as a woman in ministry, not so common then. Janelle shared that Susan was a strong support for them as a family and the church during the time of their daughter Shelley’s illness and death. In the video of the service, Susan spoke of Mark’s love of the church and his training with the Ecumenical Institute which had a powerful impact on his life and vision of the church. She also commended his vision of giving his children the opportunity to spend time in other countries: Tim-Paraguay, Shelley-India, and Todd in Japan. In talking about marks of Mark’s ministry: loving one’s enemies and caring for the neediest, Susan shared from Janelle’s little book Reflections on the Journey of Jesus in Haiku Form. Dear friends My daughter in law Nina sent this piece to me after the election. I find I comforting, illuminating, and wise. From Susan Smit, Dutch author and columnist. “In the journey toward a better world, some destruction is necessary. For a long time, I believed democracy was the ultimate achievement of civilization. But democracy, as we see at home and abroad, cannot save itself or bring about the profound changes needed to solve the great challenges of our time. Trump and other demagogues and autocrats have risen in the vacuum of disappointment with how the world is structured. They serve their own interests, yet unintentionally play a role in essential systemic changes: they accelerate the breakdown of the old order. The creation of a new world, one where we as human beings live in harmony with all other living things, is already happening on an intangible level. You can help build it by nurturing your light, staying connected to the source, and caring for all life around you. By keeping your heart radically open, despite the world’s madness and harshness, for those who need care. By distinguishing what is pure and choosing it over and over. Do not seek refuge in detachment, denial, or escape; instead, attach yourself deeply to this life, this earth, this body, and the purpose of your soul. Embrace your circle of influence. On a tangible level, there will first be even greater chaos. It will become a circus, but you don’t have to buy a ticket. Look deeper, look further, stay calm, and focus on what is taking shape: ancient, feminine values seeking to return to restore balance. You are being called to rise, deeply rooted and attuned, to shine more brightly than you have ever dared. Take the hands of your sisters and brothers, and place yourself in the circle. Election . . .

Dear Friends, For me, this is indeed a sad day for the United States, and perhaps the world. Trump's vision and actions are based on illusion--a house of cards built on sand, in the long run unsustainable and destructive. Now, we are called to continue to live into the values and truths that have guided us--love, kindness, compassion, courage, peace, beauty, justice, and gratitude for this amazing, interrelated world--and work toward a sustainable and resilient Earth and all that is in it. It will be a bumpy ride, as humanity and Earth are experiencing a great, maybe the greatest transition affecting and collapsing all humanity's systems and structures and Earth's systems. Wherever we are, we, as individuals and as communities, need to discern how best continue to be sustainable and resilient communities and perhaps be a catalyst for midwifing the yet unseen and new ways of living that will be in sync with Earth and all our relatives--animal, vegetable and mineral. It is raining here today--maybe Earth's tears of grief; but, whether we see it or not, the sun is still there, gifting us another day and the energy with which to live it in humility, gratitude and compassion and passion. a Justin Morrill memory

About 1970, the Morrills were assigned to Japan. We were honored to be asked to be the guardian family for their daughter Anita, about 4th grade as I recall. One of the perks of that assignment was that we were able to move from our bunkbed room to their “luxurious” apartment with a pull-out sofa bed and a little kitchenette …and a bathroom! We thought we were in heaven. We have been delighted to stay in touch with this family through the years, and especially to learn of the accomplishments of these three beautiful and talented daughters and families. To Anita, Genevive and Eileen and sons-in-law, and to Del, and all the grandchildren, and great grandchildren, we send our care as they gather to celebrate the completed life of a remarkable man, whose leadership within the order was so care-filled and powerful. And what a father and grandfather he must have been as we watched this family grow on FB postings. Del and Justin have served as powerful role models for decades of care and support. What a legacy for their families. We give thanks for them as a guiding team and colleagues. Like Joan, we appreciated so much Justin’s supportive visits to our various houses as part of the Panchayat treks. And how we all enjoyed the musical talents of this couple in The Cabaret and in various councils and summer programs. A special memory, from many later years when Justin was working as a fund raiser for a Catholic school, is that he asked permission to use one of John’s poems ( God Did Not Promise ) as a Thanksgiving card to the donors of the school. The archbishop of the diocese wrote a front page newsletter article about the poetry, claiming it to be the most meaningful Thanksgiving card he had seen in a long time. So we credit Justin with making this poetry John’s most famous poem. We will be with you in spirit for the Memorial Service on Friday. If there is a zoom link or recording, we would be honored to participate in that way. We are placing a gift in Justin’s memory to the ICA Archives work.
