Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues of John Gibson, On behalf of the Gibson Family, we recognize and thank you all for your gifts of friendship, compassion, support and love you gave our father, John, over the years. He was truly blessed to know so many wonderful individuals! Under normal circumstances, we would welcome you all to join us in person for John's memorial service. We had hoped that, by this time, it would be possible for us all to gather together and celebrate in person. Unfortunately, we must limit the size of our gathering. Instead, we invite you to join us in spirit and observe the memorial service from the safety of your own space. The service will be streamed live on YouTube on June 6th, starting at 2:00 pm. Thank you for this Ellie. Sometimes, it seems there is nothing we can do about the world’s struggles, especially hard when people just keep doing the same disastrous thing over and over again. Perhaps planting something is a response, regardless of its seeming unrelatedness. It is a powerful symbol of new life, and I’m always for that. I’m trying to convince Justin that planting something to attract bees would be a good thing. However, I haven’t had much luck because we are always fighting hornets in the summer. Realizing that hornets and bumblebees are not the same, I still think I would do better, with him, for butterflies. I understand they, also, have preference for different plants. Also, thank you for reminding me of my favorite quote; I’m so glad I can use it again. There is a film crew making a documentary on his life that will be shown on PBS, hopefully in 2021. (The Teilhard de Chardin Project: <http://www.TeilhardProject.com> www.TeilhardProject.com) Protests continue in Ferguson as in hundreds of places in the country and world that are now understanding what Ferguson and other places have experienced in recent years related to systemic racism and violence. The police, including the black police chief who has come to our Ministries Alliance Meetings, have been restrained, conversing and even walking with the peaceful protestors but, as a last resort, turn to tear gas and smoke bombs when other elements, the pattern showing up across the country, enter the scene and turn the situation more violent--throwing fireworks, incendiary devices, rocks and frozen water bottles and shattering windows, doors, writing graffiti, looting stores, and attempting to set fire to a couple of businesses. Media crews and helicopters circling over our house then spew the news to the TV stations. Residents show up early the next morning, cleaning up the broken glass, bottles and other scattered mess, boarding up windows and doors, and scrubbing off the graffiti. We keep you and your communities/cities in prayer as we all seek to discern how best to know, do and be as humanity now and as we move into the future. Now to go outside in the sun and plant some flowers . . . Dear Friends, It was good to be together with many of you via zoom for the Archives Social Research Assembly and then for the beautiful Celebration of Life of Charles Hahn, both profound experiences in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic and the Racism Pandemic and Social Upheaval we are experiencing now. What a powerful memorial to Charles Hahn today online! It really lifted up his whole life, his gifts, his passions, his great contribution to the Spirit Movement. It was a good model to follow I think for those who pass during this pandemic and social distancing complete with "reception" following the service. Thanks so much to the Hahn Family, especially to Patrick Moriarty's reflections, to Paul and Wayne and Eilene for hosting, technological orchestration, and leading us in the singing. And of course, all those who offered stories about Charles. We never worked directly with Charles but felt like we knew him. Thank you Doris for your teaching my PLC in October of 1969 in New York City and visiting me at the Dewey Avenue Presbyterian Church a few months afterward!
