Just to be clear: It was Esther Lyman who died; all three daughters are alive, so far as I know. Sue and Darryll live in Lemmon now, I believe. (My English-teacher nerdiness is showing.) Esther was a fine woman and of great help to us when we lived in Cannonball. We also saw her and Tom from time to time after we moved to Bismarck. We have all lost a great friend and terrific spirit woman. (Those of you who read Kathleen Norris know this family was mentioned in her book Dakota: A Spiritual Geography.) For the Internet search I entered: cannon ball north Dakota hdp A document came up in the midst of a lot of references starting with "Cannon Ball, North Dakota" and one was listed as Native American - Wedgeblade.net I clicked on it and found a document from Golden Pathways, REPORT ON NATIVE AMERICAN TREK. It starts out, "This is a brief report on an almost 10,000 mile trip to nine states covering 58 days visiting 49 possible sites on 23 reservations among 26 tribes for a Native Human Development." It is a good read. There is no attribution. Does anyone know who wrote the report? She, along with her husband Tom who died some over ten years ago were great guardians of our mission for many years. Among other things, they lent our task four of their children and they only had four. Almost all of us know one or more: Helen Lyman Williams (in Toronto), George Lyman (Texas), Addie Lyman Holm (South Dakota) and Susan Lyman Marley (who along with Darrell is in Massachusetts). As far back as the seventies when we didn't have the money we promised ourselves to have to start new houses in Europe, the Lyman's gave us what was needed to secure an apartment in Rome. They were wise and only did it when we all had jobs and enough money coming in to sustain ourselves, but no prospects for a sufficient windfall that would pay our advance rent guarantee. Addie and Susan came to visit us in that apartment. Tom and Esther came to visit after we had already moved to Trastevere (remember that was one of the original eight HDPs that we never did). Probably any one of us in a house with one of the family has memories we could share. I know that they were a lifeline to Cannonball when a project finally got that close to the family ranch in Lemmon. Esther always joked with me that she was glad that Esther was my daughter's name because the pattern of naming children was such that she had feared the use of that name might die with her. I don't know what else to say except that it feels necessary to honor those who year after year guarded our mission. Nancy Trask was interviewed on Public Radio last week (as the town librarian) about one of the notables of Winterset who was/is one of the characters in the new movie Monuments Men. The interviewer asked her what was special about Winterset in that it had so many notables (also home of John Wayne). She said (loosely quoted)that every community had heroes, lots of them. We just didn't look for or pay attention to their stories. Thanks for that good word, Nancy. Salmon: Rapid City

I have a couple of stories to share about creating the "North Rapid" project. First, a personal one, and later I'll send a longer one about the symbolic event initiating the project on a cold January night; but I digress. In seminary, I was invited to go deer hunting in southwestern Colorado. I bagged two deer, carried them back to Dallas, took the meat to the butcher and sent the hides to be tanned thinking that--some day--I'd have them made into a jacket for Beverly. In the meantime, the Order intervened, and we carried them from pillar to post. One day in Rapid City, Beverly suggested that I take these skins to the North Rapid Indian Center. The gift was so happily received that there was not enough they could do for me or the Religious House. It was an auspicious moment to connect with the female power structure. Shortly afterward, each House was instructed to bring to Order Cewnter ethnic food representing each culture. I can remember a gluttonous feast. Our contribution was 4 gallons of wojapi (buffalo berry sauce--still warm when I arrived in Chicago), and a huge box of Indian fried bread--also still warm. In these days, the airlines were more cooperative with us. The Religious House was proud to be the start of this project. Just before Beverly and I were assigned to Anchorage, Alaska, we held a Town Meeting. One of the community projects was to repaint a railroad overpass, "The Entry To North Rapid." We were a proud crowd. Inner Peace, Bill PS: Beverly and I took a sojourn on to the Rose Bud reservation near Sioux City to visit a Anglican colleague and his wife a former nun. Vee, Valentines, and Vie Day By my announcement, itis my last day at Shenyang Aerospace University Friendship Villa, so I amcalling it my valedictory day. I was given my walking papers when the China’sForeign Affairs Department decided not to extend my working visa to fulfill existingage regulations. However, I was told that the InternationalEducation Center will continue to use my services after I declared that I was anasset available to them living in the neighborhood. I suggested an emeritus relationship, which does notobligate the University to put me on the payroll but could easily justifyretaining my residence at its facility. I asked to retain my quarters. Ihad not heard from the head honcho on whether I could stay, but I was advisedby a Chinese colleague that if I wanted to play the game on who is going towink first, in the absence of a definite “NO,” I should remain in my quartersuntil advised to do otherwise. “Take the absence of aresponse as a tacit ‘Yes’”, she said. I understandthe cultural reluctance to say “No”, but perhaps, in this instance, since I ama foreigner with a different context, I should at least have the benefit of aresponse to my request, one way or the other. Not to be ornery, butthe garden apartment that I and my host family bought, signing my soul on thebank’s dotted lines, will not be handed over until July, and with the interiorstill to be constructed, I do not foresee a welcome mat on the door until late inOctober. We also purchased on the understandingthat we cannot dispose of the property for another five years. This was the developer’s guarantee that theunits were bought not as objects of speculative investment that could easily destabilizethe cost, but availed by serious dwellers. Anyway, I shall pack. Decent rentals requirea one-year contract, so I hope to continue my residency on campus until theapartment is available and ready. Thisis hardly comparable to the dilemma of CNMI home owners and their mortgagerepayments in the current economic difficulties of many families, but mystandard of living is lower than theirs, so I may be less anxiety-prone thanthey are. It is also votive candles’ day as members of my agegroup increasingly are fast fading away into the sunset. Two succumb to cancer last year, and three breath their last in the last three months from natural causes. They were well beyond the average life ageexpectancy of our time, and given my host culture’s penchant for honoringdeeply and most respectfully the memory of the dead, particularly elders, Ihave held a votive candle vigil on behalf of acquaintances who are battling “terminal”diseases, and for at least a month, those who have departed. I have six candles on the green gardem on mywindow ledge at the moment. Valentines Day is observed second only to Halloween but ahead of Santa Claus’Christmas as the most promoted western holiday in the Chinese calendar. It is also the celebration of the romanticlove projected by Hollywood, exploited without mercy by the masters andmistresses of trade and commerce in China’s malls. This, in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. Valentines comes tooclose to the recently concluded Lunar New Year and the Spring Festival, but themarket stalls are full of the “I heart (for love) you”, “I dove (for peace)you”, and “I Mickey Mouse ears you” (don’t know what that means) images andmotifs in objects and toys, and are also common symbols in t-shirts and otherattire meant for the young generation. But it is my vie day, the French word for “life”adopted into my signature of j’aime lavie, “I love life”. Among my repertoireof short courses, I voraciously celebrate the given-ness of life thus: “Like me, you are a nobody. In the scheme of things, the planet at 4.5 billion years old expected tobe around for another 4.5 billion years, in a universe 14.3 billion years alreadyin its swirl, your ideal 80-some years of existence is hardly an earth speck onthe sun’s ray. However, those 80-some years,even possibly ninety or a hundred, are all yours for the taking. Putting a face into it is solely your choiceand response-ability. Dear Climate March Friends, As we get closer and closer to our first official steps, having everything in place to embark on this journey and make it a success is our number one priority. Success begins with making sure all of our marchers and supporters have as much information as we can provide. To help keep people up to date as we speed towards the March's kickoff, we have added two new pages to our website. This page keeps track of all of the different trucks, trailers, water carriers and more that we plan to use. It is also updated with the status of these items. Salmon: Nearing the End of the Line!

Friday, February 7, 2014 TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF LOIS (Salmon) PRINTZ, JR. This is to let you know that my sister died on February 6, 2014, Thursday evening at 9:30 p.m. Three weeks ago, Beverly and I visited with her in Yountville, California, she was in hospice at this time, and all the gathered family knew it would not be long. The Yountville facility is a type of military post located in Napa Valley; it is spartan but clean with all the services you can imagine. Here Lois worked her magic during the last five years to become the queen of the facility, and the one to whom many of the 1100 residents turned to for care, leadership and enthusiasm. She was the Office Manager for the Resident Council. From her hospice bed, Lois was running for the Vice President of the Council using the theme, “I’m still here!” Three weeks ago it was likely she could win. Recently, she was elected the chairperson of Toast Masters. While visiting her during the 5 days we were present, it was difficult to have a serious conversation because of the constant stream of visitors, each with a hug and a kiss while carrying one of her campaign letters. Lois had a “significant other,” named Ben. They deeply cared for each other. One male resident told me that he had dated Lois and felt they were serious. Then one day, she asked me to sit down and told me that they would always care for each other, but that Ben (93 and still driving; God help us all) needed her more. All this is very serious. Love life never stops; God help us all. Her passing leaves me as the remaining Salmon in my father’s line to spawn the future with the Good News for living the surrendered life. In any other way, there is little too left of me to spawn. For your information, my Memorial is set for Saturday, July 29, 2014 (4 to 6 p.m., at The City), and the following Sunday at Trinity UMC during same time design. You’ll hear more about this soon. This Memorial is my way of making friends with death. Fighting death is a losing battle. My decision to make a friend of Death doesn’t change death, but it changes me. One of the Archive Collections is the Song Book. Currently there are 666 songs recorded in the database, most in Microsoft Word. 113 songs have been scanned but are not in Word. I am looking for 8 - 10 volunteers that would type the lyrics and email them back to me for inclusion in the database.
