I am doing Madiba five days these week. Sending this a copy to the listserv with the usual caveat: if curious, welcome; not, meet you at the bend. Jaime Madiba's swing andsway An old Irish blessing goes: You gotta dance like there's nobody watching. You gotta love like you'll never be hurt. You gotta sing like there's nobody listening. And you gotta live life like it's Heaven on Earth. Celebrating the completed life of Nelson Mandela is anaffirmation of the vigor of his living rather than sorrow over his demise. People in South Africa gather outside hishome to sing all day and dance all night, with nary a tear unless with delight! As a 10-day wake for the hero is observed, noticeable videosof Mandela swinging, fists clasped and elbows crooked to the sway, areplayed. I never took Mandela in motionseriously as an act of personal choice as well as a blessed part of hisgenetics. Now it gives me pause. I went to school in the U. S. southwest whereportrayed was Uncle Tom's shuffle in vaudevillian caricature. The stereotype was and is pejorative: Afro-Americansdo not walk; they shuffle in deference to the superiority of the whitest! In the Blue Mountains of Jamaica in the 80s, I noticed folksdid not quite walk the same way I did; they sauntered to an internal beat withthe fingers snapping like those in the alleyways of Chicago's Uptown where Ionce hanged out. "We don't walk, wedance," Bob Marley's followers intoned. It was not until I made it to Ijede by Lagos Lagoon inNigeria that I understood the dance beats and formations. We were singing Zambia's Tiyende pmodzi ndi mtima umo (let us live together in harmony) songwhen African colleagues started moving all parts of their bodies, with angularbending of arms, legs and torso, moving the shoulder and the hip, withstamping, scuffing and hopping steps. While there is asymmetrical use of the body, there is fluid movement onall parts. A West African colleagueblurted: "We dance when the Spirit moves". It moved a lot! I watched Anthony Quinn's rendition of Kazantzakis' Zorba the Greek in the movie version. This was at a time when Protestants were reclaimingtheir emotive tradition of the Lord of the Dance. Zorba was my quintessential male dancer. Dancing on the other side of a disaster wasnot foreign to me. The Pinoy's tinikling chronicles two birds caught ina bamboo grove in the middle of fierce wind and turbulent storm, and their onlyoption to keep out of danger is to dance! The West African dance bends the body slightly toward theearth, flattening the feet against it in a wide, solid stance in contrast tothe European ballet's upright posture; even Zorba's arms are lifted upward witha lilt on the feet raised up tiptoes. Pinoy's tinikling also doesthe same; the toes dip into and in-between the clashing bamboo poles. In contrast, the slightly bent body and bowedhead of the African dance is unmistakably earthbound! The planet Earth is home! While there are solo performances in circle dances, it isalways supported by the communal spirit of hand clapping, shouting, andsinging. Patterns established by traditionsare permitted individual creativity. Fresh interpretations of familiar gestures areallowed. Individual moves areencouraged. Madiba's swing is at once anexistential expression of his being and that of his social context. I call it social democracy, a long way fromthe Afrikaners' apartheid! Those familiar with jazz know improvisation andpolyrhythms. It comes from the sub-SaharanAfrican dance where several beats are simultaneously drummed. The hip swings to a beat, while the shoulder liftsto another, and the knees bend and the feet stamp to others. I visited West Africa in the 80s where anthropologically thedrum is said to have become the leading instrument in guiding dance moves. Enslaved in America, the African body rhythmcreated a broad range of percussion instruments, even as the gestures of handclapping, foot tapping, and flesh patting were sources of percussivesounds. In the shadows of the Africa's rainforest and savannahs, thedrumbeat was the mode of communications as smoke signals were used in the openprairies of the Americas. Dancemovements came to imitate animal behavior like the slithering of the snake andthe elephant walk. The Spirit swirls onestep and a hop at a time - forward, backward, and sideways. Humanity was born to dance! Copernicus andGalileo pointed their instruments to the sky; Newton lounging under a tree noticedforce in the falling of an apple. It isthis earthbound quality of our time that makes Madiba not just a man of theages but a contemporary wayfarer in the chaotic dance of our secular-scientific-urbanera. Indeed, the signs of the prophetsare written on the subway walls and tenement halls, as they are in Soweto (SouthWesternTownships)and the rest of the living settlements of South Africa, the backdrop of ajourney taken by one named Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela of the Madiba clan ofXhoza. The last timethe world gathered in the magnitude of Madiba's funeral was at JFK's. Jack Kennedy had us looking at the moon. Of Irish origins, he fitted the blessing of living heaven on earth. Now we see beyond the Transvaal that Mandelais strictly earthbound. He danced life inthe Bantu earthiness of his ancestry, with compassion and grace. It will serve us well to be likewise. I decided to think Madiba this week. Here's Tuesday's reflection that will be in the Saipan Tribune. Jaime Madiba of the Ages Gandhi,Churchill, King and Mandela all stood in that "yes" place to dare todeclare their hope, their dream, their confidence in the midst of “facts” thatwere telling them all was lost. Their presence of active hope made all thedifference and the “impossible” happened. Thus, wrote elderly colleague Jeannette Stanfield in Canada on her NovemberThanksgiving note. Commenting on aPaul Gilding book, The Great Disruption, sheadded: Now it is our turn to “choose active, engaged and strategic hope”. Human beings across the planet who are clearon our devastating situation must move through their despair and “roll up theirsleeves.” For we who are teachers,facilitators and preachers, we must continue to empower and grow resilienceacross all sections of humanity in order that as we face more and more chaotictimes, we will together be able to engender hope filled action and compassioninstead of fear and violence. She iscommenting on two disruptions observed by analysts chronicled in Gilding's book:climate change and the end of the economic growth model dear to economicplanners of contemporary global society. With mostanalytical bent headed straight into doomsday, it is heartening to hear andread of those who have the courage to say, "nevertheless". From many commentators this week, we willhear that word in describing one who is now known as a strategic prophet ofreconciliation and a walking evangelist of forgiveness, a hero in BillClinton's eyes. The Madiba'smuch-quoted pronouncement against poverty is once again getting anotherdrumming and drubbing. He said, “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is anact of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It isman-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that greatgeneration. Let your greatness blossom.” . . Notfor generational greatness, but Paul Clements, Dallas-born six years before wehit that town when we attended university, son of missionaries who served inIndia and Hong Kong, colleagues in a worldwide effort to further a comprehensiveyet profound spirit movement on human development, is now running for the 6thdistrict of Michigan's representative to the US Congress. He was active in the divestiture movement atHarvard when he joined to protest the University's corporate funds from earningprofits in apartheid South Africa. Paulserved in the US Peace Corps in Gambia in the late 80s. The Princeton PhD lad teaches at one of theState's universities. . . Mandela'sclaim to fame is not of his quotable quotes. Much quoted as he is, none of his lines act as leech in the mind thatattaches itself to suck the blood out of one's passion, never again to beforgotten. Not his words but the incrediblewitness of his being that endears him to many of his global followers. All one has to do is watch the man in action,whether on stage or in office, and one can easily gets mesmerized by a self soseemingly devoid of aggrandizement, yet so marvelously over brimming withselfhood, and then, not calling attention to himself, invites each of us in hisquiet ways to be likewise. . . Theforgiving applies as well to ex-VP Dick Cheney, the power behind the swivel chairwhile George Bush the younger sat in the White House's Oval office. He was unrepentant in his vote to clear theANC as a terrorist organization in the US Congress. In fact, Mandela remained in the US terroristlist until 2008, to Condoleezza Rice's great consternation. . . Wewill say the "nevertheless" word to radio commentator Rush Limbaugh'sharangue on the White House as using Mandela's demise to prop-up Obama, and hisvenom against the Clintons, accusing the couple of being opportunisticpolitical riders on the tailcoat of Mandela's greatness. We will even go so far as to forgive membersof the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas for tweeting that they are preparingto fly to South Africa to picket Mandela's state funeral! . . Towhat length does one go to forgive? Inthe case of the Nobel Laureate Xhosa regal tribesman, it seems endless, makingObama's tribute appropriate: he belongs to the Ages. For the act of pronouncing"nevertheless" and acting it to the fullest in one's being, is notnatural. It is an act of faith, livedthrough the crimson line of humanity's varied religious traditions of takingreality as one's own, and giving it the characteristic stamp of one's ownbeing! . . InMandela's case, it was a walk out of prison, in his reference to more than the27 years spent behind Robben Island, Pollsmor and Victor Verster prison's ironbars: “As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom,I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be inprison.” . . Addthe humor of a Tata (the honorific title for 'father' in the Transvaal as wellas in Malayo-Polynesia familiar to Pinoys), the father of the reformed nationof South Africa quipped: "In my country we go to prison first and thenbecome President." . . Jaime Madiba on 'Net Blankes' White Only Our title was once a common sign in South Africa where legal segregation called Apartheid was in force. In the summer of '67, after watching Fiddler on the Roof in downtown Chicago, I walked my Pea Eye cousin's former exchange student host sister to the train station for her suburban home when a Caucasian grabbed my arm and in a slurring wino voice, thundered: "what are you doing with a white girl, boy?" Not as harsh as being chased by German shepherds in the deep South, segregation no longer official U.S. policy then, but the practice, as is still is in many quarters, of racial discrimination was deeply embedded and evident in the American psyche and behavior. Nelson Mandela's life was a gracious and compassionate response to this reality, still a plague in South Africa, but no longer the official stance of its government. At 95, Mandela died this week. U.S. President Obama, himself a product of humanity's turning tide, eulogized: "He no longer belongs to us, he belongs to the ages . . ." It is never polite to comment on a President's solemn declaration, especially one we support, but Mandela becoming a part of us has a long way to go. One of my Chinese students took a two-week trip this term to the United States with her family. As a condition to my permission for excused absences from class, she had to make a five-minute report in English of her trip when she returned. Items in her report included a day in Waikiki when she and her mother went to the beach, each holding an umbrella. They were shielding themselves from the sun. The rest of the crowd at the beach were eagerly tanning themselves to get brown under the sun! Her notion of beauty was just being lily white. No tint of yellow, please. African students at the International Education College of Shenyang Aerospace University often relate how they are treated with their dark skins. "The girls will date us, and even marry us, as long as we take them away from China. Any of our children are not Chinese even if their mother's genes are more dominant. Chinese men do not date African girls at all." Farmers and countryside folks worldwide protect themselves from the sun in the field, and though there is harshness in the wind, shields are primarily to avoid getting sun-tanned. China, Korea, and Japan (and also the mestizo/a in Southeast Asia), often rate one's social status by the fairness of one's skin! The skin whitener lotion has become more than a fad in India. It is big business. Movie stars and well-known personalities promote the product. Not that it should come as a surprise. On our journey to Delhi-Mumbai-Pune-Aurangabad (the last three are cities in the State of Maharashtra) in the 70s, I was unprepared to witness the distinction between north and south India as primarily racial. The northern Indo-Aryan was a socially favored status-wise over the darker Dravidian. The same held true in a teaching trek to Jamaica, Guatemala, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Venezuela in the 80s. When I worked at the Southwest Bankcard Association in the 60s in Texas, I was stunned to hear a mixed Caucasian-Afro-American girlrefer to her colleague as a "black nigger" in a rather pejorative manner. We were surprised earlier at the social pecking order in a Chicago camera factory summertime job when my fair Puerto Rican brunette co-worker referred to her fellow workers from Tejas-Mejico as "niggers'. For the record, the top 20 global beauty companies totaled a whopping $104 billion in sales in 2005. All directly or indirectly promote fair skin products registering increased sales in China, Korea, and Japan. The list includes: Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, L’Oréal, France,Unilever, UK/Netherlands, Estée Lauder, NYC, Avon, NYC, Shiseido, Japan, Beiersdorf, Germany, Johnson & Johnson, NJ, Alberto-Culver, IL, Henkel, Germany, Coty, NYC, Limited Brands, Columbus, LVMH (Dior, Givenchy, Guerlain, et al), France, Colgate-Palmolive, NYC, Kao, Japan, Mary Kay, TX, Yves Rocher, France, Kosé, Japan, Access Business Group (Satanique), MI, and Revlon,NYC. Ads in China promote blonde and blue-eyed models in lily-white environments. With such formidable global force delicately trained in the glitzy art of Avenue des Champs- Elyssees, Park Avenue, Ginza, and Soho, in the assault on the planetary mind, people of color stand a slim chance of affirming the givenness of their skin color and tone. The sign 'Net Blankes' White Only is not only a historical one of South Africa. It is in internal and external neon lights across many of humanity's current psychological frames and societal practices, touting the virtues of Slavic-Teutonic skin fairness. Nelson Mandela's demonstrated message was simple. Yes, we need to watch the official policies, and, yes, pay attention to the quality of our commercial consumption, but it finally redounds to one's relationship and ownership to one's own skin. In my class at the University, I wear beautiful brown. As SA President Jacob Suma said in his address in declaring the nation's flag to be at half-mast: "What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human, we saw in him what we seek in ourselves." UPTOWN con't

Dear Ones, Isn't it amazing how a topic that touched so many of us can spark such a list of responses. We are certainly story animals! Here's mine! Until 1980, Fred and I had not lived in Chicago under assignment. We had visited both the West Side campus and then in 1972 after participating in the opening of the Indianapolis house during our intern year, attended the Summer program in the Kemper building from the Indianapolis House. Since I did not know any of our neighbors there, I had no way to know what they thought of us as we moved in and out of the building so frequently. Then of course, following the summer program, we ALL moved out with suitcases, beds, and every thing else one could think of into all of those big trucks waiting behind the building in the alley! I really wondered then who they thought we were! We arrived from Nairobi and Kawangware in the summer of 1980, Fred being sick with malaria and I following along later to find him better but still weak. Imagining that we would return to Kenya later that summer, we had left most of our "stuff" behind, under out bed over the bar in Kawangware. But life had another plan fr us - surprise? Priscilla Wilson as part of the assignment commission, decided that Fred and I were called to guide, facilitate, join the staff .... of Phase One including the Student House, EG structures and youth clusters out in the regional houses. It was then following a difficult decision on my part to take the Phase one assignment that we began to understand what it would look like to live in Uptown! Although those of us who lived in the Kemper building, 3rd floor suggested that we be seen as living on the moon! we certainly interacted with others who lived in the rest of the building in many creative and not so creative ways! That is another story! Our interactions in the neighborhood was mostly through the student house residents as they told stories of encounters with kids from school and around Uptown. However, I do remember Church's Chicken, Siam, The Green Mill, the El train stop, Joan Arai school, the church, hospital's etc. And, I do remember driving Metro and leaving Uptown with a crowd of teenagers in the Sububans for the car-crowded streets of the suburbs to deliver grocery flyers. What a time! One more memory of being in the Kemper building for the first time .... do you remember? One evening during the program, someone decided that whosoever would go over the the West Side and sing hymns. Joe and Lynn were there, someone played the piano and we sang for several hours - no music, just our memories of being raised in a church that sang! I remember watching Joe sing! I can still hear us singing, even now after 41 years! So much for memories that just seem to spill out of me .....thanks for sharing yours. With love and gratitude, Nancy

Photos from Uptown in 1970s

I thought some of you might be interested in a new book of photos from Chicago's Uptown neighborhood in the the 1970s. Take a look at this story about it: http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2013/11/20/taking-look-uptown-40-years-ago It was eerie looking at these photos. It reminds me of some photo essays I've seen of poor neighborhoods in the 30s and 40s. Looking at those older photos I always think, "Wow! So people were really living like that!" Then I look at this essay and think, "Wow! I was living smack dab in the middle of all that!" A very strange feeling. This also reminds me of how I felt moving into the Kemper building when I returned from England in the summer of 1972. Everyone told me how dangerous the neighborhood was. All I could think was that it was nowhere near as dangerous as Fifth City. I was cautious in Uptown but I didn't live in constant fear, as I had as a child in Fifth City. I just ordered the last hard copy of the book from Amazon, but they say there are more on the way. I wish everyone a joyful and meaningful holiday season! Fondly, Shelley

Memories of Uptown

I remember staying up all night loading rented trucks to go from 5th City to Uptown. Others stayed up all night in Uptown, unloading the trucks. I'm not sure this is true, but it seems some people who had been staying in the Kemper building were moving back to 5th City. So, in my memory, there's the absurdity of loading and unloading everyone's board-and-brick bookshelves and books going both ways. Many of the books in everyone's boxes were the same titles. Kindle was 35 years too late. I was on the Emerging Generation team with Alice Baumbach, Wayne Nelson and Catherine Whitney until after Summer '73, when I went with the children to Geneva Crossroads camp. I don't remember E.G. structures in Kemper, so I think the move must have been June, after school was out and before we went to camp. Does that sound right? Living in Kemper in those days was quite an experience. Fred and I had a small room on 5th floor with three glass walls. The fourth wall, with a window, looked out to Lawrence. Our corner bed was a futon that I made from foam rubber, that went on top of desks. We used the desk drawers that faced outward as storage, as well as a file cabinet and metal book shelf with the middle shelves replaced with a closet rod. Patrick and Barry slept in a dorm situation down the hall. Suzanne and Scott were assigned to Milwaukee and Madison. In fall, '73 I was assigned to the kitchen/housekeeping team with Judy Radke and Maxine Manning, who was our prior. The kitchen, with no walk-in refrigerator, was woefully inadequate to feed the number of people we had (500?) three times a day, not to mention the quarterly prior gatherings. We designed, and I made, ruffly aprons which we donned like armor over our order blue polyester, but they didn't work to keep Maxine and Judy from getting hepatitis, leaving me alone to cope with meal planning, ordering the food and keeping the 50 cents-per-meal budget. Or was it per day? Whatever it was, we really needed the in-kind food I begged at the produce truck docks once a week. I confess I sometimes dreamed of getting hepatitis myself. Fred Buss gave a hilarious lecture to all residents on basic sanitation to avoid contracting the disease. Whose idea was it to have the kitchen team also clean the bathrooms? One morning I eavesdropped on the conversation of two homeless men taking shelter in the Lawrence entry. We used the hallway between that door and the back elevator for storage, and I went there to get something that was on the menu. "It was cold last night." "You can't sleep on the streets of Chicago any month of the year without getting cold." Fred McGuire was on the development team, gone most of the time. That was the grumpiest year of my life. I acted out in numerous ways. If I was unkind to anyone reading this, I'm truly sorry. But the grits were not my fault. Jann McGuire In a message dated 12/5/2013 8:23:47 A.M. I was working with Phil Townley at the time, and accompanied him to a council meeting which was to provide permission for us to make the move. They asked all sorts of questions about who we were, and I was furiously scribbling answers for Phil to give. He thoroughly ignored everything I wrote (wisely, it turned out). We got the permission and moved in. One feature of the early days was security: someone was posted in the Guild Hall at night and had to check the door to the back alley every hour. The noises of a near-empty building at night made for nerve-wracking times. It wasn't ghosts that were scary -- one felt almost able to handle them, It was what was outside that created the unease. The rooms were office spaces, and some had walls; the rest had file cabinets as dividers with curtains hung from the ceiling. Privacy was hard to come by. But work space was ample on the first floor, and for the first time, many of us had actual desks and file cabinets! It would be good to hear stories from others who made the move. John Epps

I'm a little appalled at the blithe perpetration of degrading racial stereotypes by recent posts regarding the photo of a Black man (dressed pretty normally in an era appropriate casual suit) - I had a similar suit in Blue and was not considered pimpish. The guy looks like my brother-in-law. Did you bother to read the caption? And if you did, why did you dismiss it out of hand ? Because of some memory "feelings" of some kind? And we wonder why our prisons are packed to the gills with Black men. Black man / white girl still gets you arrested in this country. Hmmm. Don't get me wrong - feelings are important. Unconsciously casting and perpetrating generalized judgements based on feelings .... is a game only the privileged of this country clearly benefit from.
