First, a reflection on Ellery - as a young and inexperienced Global Prior, Ellery was one of the ones who was gracious enough to let me learn from my mistakes without rancor and yet with continued nourishing support. Just her face was a human support mechanism. She spiritually nourished me and we rarely even spoke. And with mortality on my mind as so many saints are called home, knowing you have gone with God, I will let go a bit of the anticipation of my own return. For Carol, while there are many, many memories: one that popped to the top was the time we were at the IERD in Delhi and had boarded the VERY tiny elevator on the top floor (about the 22nd as I recall) of the hotel where we were housed. We pushed the button for the ground floor and about a third of the way down, the elevator shuddered to a stop and the door opened.on a brick wall. Well, I was a little claustrophobic and unaware that Carol was extremely claustrophobic. That hour waiting to be rescued (it could have been 15 minutes, but seemed like SEVERAL hours) was revealing of the wondrous woman of steel (Superman move over) who kept us breathing and laughing to avoid injuring ourselves in the mad panic of fear that sets in when you MUST get OUT and you cannot. Clearly our circumstances were not our problem. While in "Heaven," do a few cartwheels for me, my dear, as I know we both would enjoy them. 50th Anniversary

Last week was a time for major events in Chicago connected with ICA's 50th Anniversary. One was more external while the other was more internal. On Saturday, September 15, ICA-USA was the organizing sponsor for the "Accelerate 77" Share Fair. This event has dramatically re-positioned us for the sake of expanding our national programs. Several colleagues from across the country were present. If you would like to see some photos and video, click on the following link: http://ica.site-ym.com/news/news.asp?id=103496 Two days before, we had an unveiling of the an art piece which will serve hang at 4750 for the next 50 years. The artist, Gina Alicea, named the completed piece "Ocean of Devotion." You can view her description about the work on the following link: * * http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/25387580 The work consists of more than a thousand pieces of cloth. On each appears written information that originated from one of three sources. First, about 350 pieces name deceased staff members and colleagues who worked at one time or another with EI/OE/ICA during the past 50 years. Others identify important past programs and projects --- RS-1, the Academy, and 24 Human Development Projects, etc. Second, several pieces highlight current programs and supporters, e.g., Technology of Participation (ToP), Accelerate 77 and its advisory committee, names of donors, etc. Third, 600+ pieces were created during fifty events that occurred across the country and around the world to mark the 50th Anniversary. Participants at these events wrote statements on strips of cloth to express their hopes and dreams, or, as we like to say, "claim a promise," for the next fifty years. The piece therefore includes symbolism of ICA's past, present, and future. It has been a full week. I am particularly grateful that Carol Pierce joined us at the Share Fair and celebrated our 50th Anniversary just a few days before she passed. Terry Bergdall

I'm making a short trip to ICA Chicago. Will arrive early tomorrow morning and depart on Saturday. Will honor our past by a few hours of work on the archives. Also plan to meet with Jack Gilles to continue discussions of how we "carry on" the work of EI and OE in a new day. Carol Pierce

Linda and I were visiting Georgianna McBurney in Malibu last Saturday and informed her of Carol's death. Her response after the initial experience of loss that was clear from her expression was "Is there a memorial fund planned. Since we were not sure I said we would check. I am sure someone receiving this message will know and can get back to us. Georgianna does not check her E-mail unless one of her kids or I check it for her. Her memory is often a bit spotty, but she definitely wanted to do something to honor Carol. It was good that so many of us were in Chicago at the time of her passing. Sorry we could not have been there personally. Linda and I do send our sincere thoughts to her close friends and her family. We knew Carol as the courageous spirit in the wheelchair but were not part of her inner circle, except through stories. Thanks for any information. I keep on wanting to read more emails about Carol's life and death, but she has 'waved goodbye and is on her way'. Such sadness.... And in many way, it continues. Charles and I traveled three months in 1966, with Carol and Joe, visiting countries of the Arab world. We spent a lot of time reading, talking and reflecting before we left Chicago, and of course, that continued throughout the trip. During meals and coffee/tea breaks, Carol often made some succinct comment (laced with facts and figures) about the current country we were visiting. Joe would say, "How do you know that?" to which Carol would reply, "Well, it was in that book we read before we left Chicago." And Joe would just shake his head in disbelief (and some degree of disgust). I last saw Carol at her apartment. We had to rush the visit a bit, because she was being picked up by some specially equipped vehicle and whisked off to a medical appointment. So, my last memory of Carol is her wheeling herself onto a elevator/platform that went up a few feet from her "garden" apartment to ground level, thereby allowing her to move her wheelchair directly out onto the driveway. She wheeled around, waved goodbye and was on her way. A reflection on Native American (American Indian/First Nation, etc) Day as recognized by the Presbyterian Church (USA)... In the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s program calendar, today September 23 (4th Sunday of September) is designated Native American Day--maybe other faith communities do so as well or in various ways --I don't know. Below is a song in honor and remebrance of the First Nation Peoples whose legacy and presence still implore and challenge us to honor, care for and live in harmony with Creation and each other, walking lightly on Earth's sacred space. Red Cloud was an Oglala Lakota Sioux Chief in 1800s-early 1900s who defended his people and land against the continual encroachment, plundering and broken treaties by the U.S. government, military, and economic interests. He was the only one to defeat the US military in what was called Red Cloud's War (although the US started it) 1866-68 when the US built forts on Lakota land. He was a leader before, a contemorary of Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Big Foot and others and outlived them, dying on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1909. Today, Pine Ridge is the poorest community in the United States. Some statistics indicate its poverty rate and hopelessness level lower than Haiti. Similar patterns of political oppression, economic exploitation and religious legitimation (Borg) continue to be US policy toward populations in this nation as well as other nations. Such behavior, especially our attitude toward the earth, is coming back to haunt us.
