Thanks, Karen, thanks, Ellie Calmly?? Ellie, that whole poem was just sitting inside you and out it came? What amazing people there are in this world! Wasn't there a conversation on tears somewhere in our past?? And still . . . For me, a bunch of recollections came up -- I recalled being with my father when he died, and the day in Brussels when the large trees rimming the garden were trimmed way, way down -- and the looks of grief on colleagues faces watching the trimming happen and the time I facilitated a Practical Vision workshop (in Maliwada, as I recall) and it started slowly and then the visions were just bubbling forth -- a preschool, healthy food, a new well, employment, . . . And then, towards the end of the naming, and the group got very quiet and very serious and sort of sad . . . And I worried that I had done something to offend . . . So I asked -- I think it was Rukminibhai, what happened, had I done some clumsy, inappropriate thing -- and she said, "This was exciting, but it is not as though we haven't thought of and dreamed of those things before . . . So often, when we have, they haven't happened -- we were defeated, deflected, blocked . . . And that reminder is what brought up the sadness in us . . -- and I thought about contradictions . . My sister and I talk on the phone each week so I sent her your emails, and some of my reflections and said I wanted to talk a bit about grief and memories of deaths in our family. This was interesting to me -- at the start of our call, she enumerated the artefacts she had assembled to surround her as we talked -- an opal ring from Mother, a gold chain with a cross from Grandma, remembrance of a handkerchief belonging to my sister which Mother had placed in Grandma's casket . . . Four Gates of Grief

This week the Daily Good had an article by Francis Weller called “Drinking the Tears of the World: Grief as Deep Activism”. Weller articulates four gates of grief that I have never known how to acknowledge before: 1. Losing someone loved 2. Neglected places of soul such as as a sense of shame and feeling of inadequacy 3. Losses in the world of species, habitats and cultures 4. Loss of community and rituals that keep us connected to our soul With this understanding one realizes that everyone grieves. I find myself wondering how much anger and hatred in society covers a deeper experience of grieving. What is your response to this writing? Peace and love, Karen Snyder Troxel

Celebrating the life of David Rebstock

David Rebstock died two days ago. Ellen Rebstock asked that I post this obituary about his life. Obituary for David Martin Rebstock David Martin Rebstock passed away peacefully at home in Rochester, Minnesota on Saturday, October 21 at the age of 86. He is remembered for having been a loving husband to Ellen, father to Mark, Tim and Peter, and for having lived a life of global service. He cared deeply about the world, its people, and the challenges facing our planet. He was born in Waterford, Wisconsin December 9, 1936 to Milton and Alfreda Rebstock. He has fond memories of playing in the Fox River there and took great pride in his fishing boat, his newspaper route, and working at an early age. He studied at Luther College in Iowa and completed his BA in Accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he also served in ROTC. He served in the United States Army from 1959-1961 and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. While there, he took advantage of leaves to explore Italy, Spain, and Scandinavia. After the Army, he returned to the University of Wisconsin, as he said, to get his Masters and his Mrs. He had met Ellen Vinette Long in 1962 while at the University of Wisconsin and they were married in 1965. Their family soon grew with the arrival of Mark, Tim and Peter. He worked as a CPA at Arthur Anderson from 1964-1976. David and Ellen joined the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA), a human development organization in 1976. While with the ICA, he made economic development treks to communities throughout Southeast Asia, Jamaica, and the United States. As a family, David and Ellen and their three boys lived in more than 25 places in 58 years of marriage including Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Scheveningen, Netherlands; Chicago, Illinois; Singapore; San Francisco and Los Angeles, California; Kingston, Jamaica; Cincinnati, Ohio; Sacramento and Santa Rosa, California; Greensboro, North Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; Rochester, Minnesota; and for 8 months, an R.V. named Maggie. He is preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Alfreda Rebstock. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Bucholtz; wife, Ellen; his sons, Mark, Tim and Peter; daughters in law, Tracy and Katherine; and grandchildren, Charlie and Anna. A celebration of life service is being planned by his family for later this Fall. Note from Karen below -- I missed it on October 8 I charted Soul Boom and saved the chapter on the pillars of a spiritual revolution. I did not like the character of Dwight, so was challenged about the author and his credibility. Loved the bits and descriptions of his religious upbringing. Also loved his list of pandemics -- and his contention that the main one we are facing has to do with mental illness (spiritual despair??) Was attracted that he titled chapter 4 "The Notorious G. O. D." but disappointed by his approach (also a recent book called "The Not-Yet God" which was trying to pull together the philosophical threads to create a contemporary context for talking about the reality we are finally up against in life -- AMAZING JARGON in the summaries I read. brought back old memories . . . Yes, would be fun . . . Your comment: "You KNOW where his ashes are!" reminded me of the Ronin: "You knew! You knew! And yet you still used that door!"Jim Wiegel Theunknown is what is.
