Today I received the obituary for Art Brandenburg, who was my Methodist campus pastor more than a half century ago at Duke. It was there that I first tasted the waters of the Christian Faith and Life Community. Art joined Bill Coffin in campus ministry at Yale and taught RS-1 & PLC for years with colleagues in the Boston area. And inspired me to go to seminary @ UTS and then on to 4570 W. Congress Parkway. Most of you know the rest of my story. Today we celebrate Art's completed life with joy and sorrow. Marshall obituary at http://www.philly.com/philly/obituaries/20120723_Rev__Arthur_Brandenburg__81...
Marshall, Thanks for sharing this and especially the link. Art was one of the early master teachers I encountered. He was a sign of what the Church was about. His legacy with the Order and the Movement is a great one. May he journey on in peace and tranquility. Our prayers are with his family. Grace & Peace, Jack

"I always wondered why he didn't move right in. . ." Of course there was a 'why.' It was obvious that Art was recognizably one of 'the Order' in spirit, even though he never 'moved in.' My best guess as to 'why': sometimes those who are called to be the Order are also called to deal with their family covenant as a primary condition. Art leaves behind a wife (Becky) and a profoundly mentally disabled dependent son (Mark). Not a good 'fit' with our corporate 'craziness.' I also think of Jim & Eunice Mathews as part of the Order who never 'moved in.' Thanks Marshall, for you nailed it. Art was as much the Order as any of us is. He understood the un-written rule and lived our form of disciplined corporateness in his own situation. The OE had a form, but it was part of a formless Order that existed, and still exists in the world. Have a great time in Junaluska! Your presence when the Springboard met there was profound and your stories and love for what it represents were enlightening. Go in Faith brother. Jack On Jul 24, 2012, at 10:47 AM, W. J. wrote:

Hope appeareth, but it is not your Hope—you do not have anything to do with it. It just appeareth. It comes as a stranger, as an alien—it just appeareth! You do not even know why you hope. How in the world could you hope when there is absolutely nothing to justify any hope? ~Joseph W. Mathews

Marshall,
Thanks for sharing this and especially the link. Art was one of the early master teachers I encountered. He was a sign of what the Church was about. His legacy with the Order and the Movement is a great one. May he journey on in peace and tranquility. Our prayers are with his family.
Grace & Peace,

Thanks Marshall, I have powerful memories or Art and cherish them. Some where in this ancient mind of mine, I have the memory of Art founding a Christian Faith and Life Community at Duke in the very lat 50's or early 60's. Could anyone confirm that? Whatever, he was a towering spirit of the times. Charles On Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 6:43 PM, W. J. <synergi@yahoo.com> wrote:
Today I received the obituary for Art Brandenburg, who was my Methodist campus pastor more than a half century ago at Duke. It was there that I first tasted the waters of the Christian Faith and Life Community. Art joined Bill Coffin in campus ministry at Yale and taught RS-1 & PLC for years with colleagues in the Boston area. And inspired me to go to seminary @ UTS and then on to 4570 W. Congress Parkway. Most of you know the rest of my story. Today we celebrate Art's completed life with joy and sorrow. Marshall

Yes, Charles, Art created a 'Lay Scholars' program at the Duke Methodist Student Center modelled on the CF&LC college program. I was there from 1958 to 1962 ... that is, a MUCH younger version of me was there! Like, 18 years old going on 14, or something like that. LOL. Art was my first mentor in my journey to the Order. As ever, we delight in W.J.'s amusingly full humanity. May your tribe increase! Did the UNC-Greensboro Faith and Life Community House in '68. Would Art have been involved in that one? The name is familiar. j'aime la vie -----Original Message----- From: W.
