We have lived in a lot of different places, but the bank vault takes the prize. We could not have fit an RS-1 group in there, though! The Addington's were the first to live in that coal bin - 2 adults and 3 small children. We painted the bin white. Anytime someone hosed off the veranda, we got wet. We were the 1st priors of the Atlanta House; such housing assignments were common among us in those years. James

The Addington's were the first to live in that coal bin - 2 adults and 3 small children. We painted the bin white. Anytime someone hosed off the veranda, we got wet. We were the 1st priors of the Atlanta House; such housing assignments were common among us in those years.

Joe Pierce once talked about the purpose of the news conversation was not to say either how bad life is or how good life is. That being said, we lived three years in a dwelling that had a palm leaf thatched roof and no walls. The dogs and chickens wandered through every note and then. Granted we did have a floor of loose river stones. When Mary Warren did an HDP visit, she covered her head when she changed clothes so she would not know if someone across the village center could see her. Looking back, I would not judge it good or bad, as I sense none of the previous stories do either. We did succeed in walking our talk some of the time. Then I remember how my high school friends were scandalized when I described living in the Kemper building without individual bathrooms. Granted we did have a floor of loose river stones. When Mary Warren did an HDP visit, she covered her head when she changed clothes so she would not know if someone across the village center could see her.
Looking back, I would not judge it good or bad, as I sense none of the previous stories do either. We did succeed in walking our talk some of the time.
Then I remember how my high school friends were scandalized when I described living in the Kemper building without individual bathrooms. I know we could generate quite a thread about all the various toilets we have survived.
What glorious lives we have lived.

There seems to be a saga of our magical abodes rising here… I remember the red and white tent in Kelapa Dua with bamboo mat walls, men on one side, women on the other side of a central divider. Great in tranquil weather, not so great in a monsoon storm watching the tent peal away with the wind and the rain happily providing a full staff nighttime shower. He also was a VP at the First National Bank of Chicago (which has long ago disappeared under acquisitions and mergers and is now a part of Chase). While George Sisler was introduced at a couple of research assemblies I attended, I met him one-on-one in the early ‘80s when I represented EI at an annual gala for the Church Federation of Greater Chicago. I asked him about his selection process in offering the job to Mathews in 1962. He enjoyed re-telling the story about his surprise when several people began work though only one salary was in the contract. He said he never saw any group stretch a dollar further than than the Ecumenical Institute! Terry

He was President of the Church Federation of Greater Chicago in 1962 and was responsible for hiring Joe Mathews as Dean of the Ecumenical Institute. He also was a VP at the First National Bank of Chicago (which has long ago disappeared under acquisitions and mergers and is now a part of Chase). He remained a high profile supporter of the Ecumenical Institute until his death in the 1992. Here is his obituary:
