Anyone who expects morality from any government is due for disappointment.  ‘Human institutions are based on unbelief.’  They quite often act without conscience, compassion or even enlightened self-interest.  I could list the holodrome, the Uighers (sp?), Rohingyas, Sudan, the list goes on.  Responsible action in the face of all systems is often partial, retrograde, and diminishing the suffering (see Lest Innocent Blood be Shed).  We have called ourselves ‘structural revolutionaries,’ and we are.  But the dynamics of scapegoating, of dehumanization and unthinking destruction do not disappear in any period of history, nor do I expect them to in the future.  

‘Global leadership’ is a strange phrase.  The economic resources backing ‘global leaders’ are not stopping. China, Russia, USA, all are reactive and centered on control and power.  Europe is increasingly divided, BRIC is another challenge.   Elements of each and elements in each have sought a wider perspective.  But they are always the ‘sensitive and responsive’ part – not the whole.  

All of this is to say that the innocent suffering that is generated in these situations is a claim on us – and how we will respond in ourselves to change scapegoating, blaming and shaming into responsible action grounded in both compassion and forgiveness.

True for my son Ajit/Shel Sampa, with dual-citizenship. Both my Canadian sons voted in the US election. I believe Shel Sampa voted for Jill Stein and Aidan voted for Kamala.

Pro-Palestinian, he is disillusioned by the US oligarchy represented by the Democratic Party and the US oligarchy represented by Trump’s Republicans.

While not for me, for him, abortion rights, racism, gender, economic disparity, come after that.

We talked of “the collapse of Western Civilization” 60 years or so ago and this is what it looks like and how it feels. It was delayed by the astounding economic growth and the agency women gained to bring into a household another whole salary.
