[Oe List ...] Searching for a paper

Bill, I agree with Ruth about the helpfulness of what you are doing. It is of course in the spirit of RS-1 of demythologizing and humanizing abstract theological concepts. God is a mysterious power. Christ is a word of possibility. Holy Spirit is responsibility in freedom and obedience. The Church is a group of social pioneers. Sin is separation from others. Grace is an experience of reunion. Gratitude.

See below!

BTW – a good resource (you have to get past some of the piety) for playing with Greek:

If you sort through the language options you’ll see some interesting ones.

Hi Bill,

I don’t quite know what drove you to work in Greek, but this is a wonderful report out of your work. These particular words are ones that get thrown around a LOT! Thank you for sharing this.

These are some words I’d be interested in hearing about in the Greek - if you are so inclined.

  * Forgiveness: aphiemi. Let go/send away. Same word is used for divorce! Release.
  * Prayer- proseuchomai – to articulate a wish or hope.
  * grace – charis. Where we get ‘charisma.’ Related to the greeting ‘Chairo’ – ‘Be of good cheer, be happy.’ That which affords joy, pleasure, etc.

OK, so I’ve been playing with the Greek behind the translations in the English documents called the ‘New Testament.’

  1. What gets translated ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ is baseliea Ouranos. The heavens – Ouranos – encompass all of the planet, etc. Baselieia has at its root word bas – which means footing or foundation (it’s where we get the English word ‘base.’) While it’s used for the Roman Empire as well, it has a different connotation. If one’s foundation is Rome, there are certain implications for context and behavior. But if one’s foundation is the heavens, then there are different implications as far as being inclusive, comprehensive – well, you get the picture.
  2. The word that is translated as ‘sin’ is hamartia – the negative of martia (which is where we get ‘martial’) but martia actually refers to ‘mark’ as in target. So the literal translation here is ‘missing the mark.’ Taking the hole instead of the doughnut. Living in illusion? Not getting it? Screwing up?
  3. Repentance translates the word ‘metanoia’ – literally ‘new’ – meta – mind – nous/noia. New mindedness. Or ‘Ah! Now I get it!’
  4. Resurrection translates several words in Greek, one of which is ‘egeiro’ which literally translates as ‘awaken.’ Getting woke? Another is histemi – Stand up. Wake up, get up!
  5. Save and heal often translate the same Greek word – sozo – which is also literally to make whole.
  6. Heal also translates the word ‘therapeuo’ – where we get ‘therapy,’ but means to serve. Healing as serving – interesting.

FWIW -
