[Oe List ...] House Experiences

The residents of 314(?) Homan in Fifth City were: Ron & Marci Clutz, 
third floor, Jim & Lynn Bell, basement, Terry & Karen Wright, third 
floor, Alice & myself, second floor. Late fall '71. Due to the cold, the 
steam heat was just turned on. The steam valve in our room was open and 
allowed live steam to flood our room with hot moisture soaking 
everything even the oil cloth ceiling.  It sagged so low that on our 
return from our late night security detail, we could only open the door 
to our apartment with great effort.   As we finally forced the door open 
what faced us in the living room were hundreds of cockroaches scurrying 
across the flour paste that held the oil cloth to the ceiling.  We had 
to pull the rest of the ceiling cover down and roll it up in order to 
clear the room.  We dragged the mess, cockroaches and all, out to the 
back and threw it on a pile of debris that had piled up. Cockroaches 
were our constant companions for a long time!

We also were assigned to Kemper and I believe we were on the sixth floor 
as well.  Our room was a small office with two steel desks pushed 
together to make our bed and desk drawers for the rest of our "two 
suitcase" belongings.  Our neighbors next to us were Ruth & Fred Haman 
and across the hall from us were Fred & Sarah Buss.  At that time the 
permeators were arranged in teams.  Ruth and I were on the same team of 
which I was the team leader when Ruth mysteriously disappeared.  It was 
a frantic time and caused much commotion.  We never found her.
