As journalists and storytellers, it's especially meaningful for us to share today's short film on Jovita Idar, a bold Latina journalist and women’s rights and civil rights activist. Next week’s film will feature Jeannette Rankin, the first woman member of the U.S. Congress and a passionate suffragist and peace activist. The film also spotlights Congresswoman Deb Haaland, one of the first two American Indian women elected to Congress, who reflects on the state of women in national politics today, as well as the challenges American Indians have faced fighting for citizenship and voting rights throughout American history.

Our last two films will tell the inspiring stories of American Indian composer, author and civil rights activist Zitkála-Šá/Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (releasing August 19), interviewing modern-day counterpart and Standing Rock Sioux historian, LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, and of newspaper editor, civil rights crusader, and the first African American woman Vice Presidential candidate Charlotta Spears Bass (releasing August 26), featuring Pulitzer Prize winning reporter for The New York Times Magazine, Nikole Hannah-Jones.

What Does "Unladylike" Mean to You?

In an interview with Good Morning America released today, UNLADYLIKE2020 co-host Julianna Margulies admitted that she has always been a little unladylike, inspired by her grandmother, who graduated from the NYU School of Law in 1924, and more recently, by all the women profiled in the series. Margulies said that for her "unladylike" means being powerful, adding, "the more educated you are in the history of the women's struggle, whether you're a woman or a man, the more peaceful our coexistence is going to be together." UNLADYLIKE2020 at Bentonville Film Festival: August 10-16

Live-streamed from Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, the event features speakers, music by the Philadelphia Orchestra and other guest musicians, and a nationwide toast to the tenacious suffragists whose efforts won voting rights for American women.
