[Oe List ...] Salmon: On prayer

Bill,

Several years ago I visited the modest home of Phillip Simmons in Charleston, SC.  Mr. Simmons, now deceased, was the  African American man who designed and built the gates on many of the famous Charleston gardens, as well as the gate at the entrance to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

In his bedroom he had a poster on the wall that was the best short-course on prayer that I've ever run across and it has stuck with me over the years like no other.  The poster had an old black man, a lot like Mr. Simmons himself, down on his knees beside his bed.  The caption beneath read, "If you think God doesn't answer prayer, then get off your knees and do something."

Mr. Simmons continued to live in his little white frame home in a low income neighborhood of Charleston until he moved to a long-term care facility shortly before his death at, I've heard, over age 90.  With the considerable amount of money he made from his gates he sent his children and then his grandchildren to college.  And then he sent most of the neighborhood kids as well.  Prayer, the action before the action, indeed!  Poverty, chastity and obedience in the flesh!

Best wishes,
Randy

No change without action, no action without thought.

Colleagues--
This is my response to Barbara Wendland's newsletter article on the problem with prayer.
    Watcha think?
    Bill
PS: Barbara Wendland has been around for a long time and operates as a thorn in the side of the traditional church. Consider asking for her free monthly newsletter. At one time many of us in OE already knew of her efforts.

I e-mail Connections to a large list, so to avoid getting it filtered out by your spam filter, you may need to enter into your address book the address from which I send it -- bcwendland at vvm.com . (That's v v m, not w m as it looks like in some fonts.)

If you’re getting Connections this month for the first time, you might like to see back issues or information about Connections. If so, you can find them on my website--http://www.connectionsonline.org/Connections_issues.htm

If you're new at getting Connections by e-mail, I remind you that to read this issue, you must first download the attached file to your computer, or you must click on the website link above and find the issue there. Then to open the file, you must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader software program on your computer. If you have a very old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, you may need to uninstall it and download and install the most recent version, using the link below to the Adobe website. Getting this program is easy and free. To get it, click on this link Adobe Acrobat Reader and follow the instructions you find at the Adobe website it takes you to, for downloading the software to your computer. After you have the Adobe software, whenever you click on the name of a pdf file, the file will automatically open.

Thanks for your interest in getting Connections. I’ll appreciate knowing your reaction to its contents anytime you’d like to respond, and I’ll appreciate your letting other interested people know about it.

Barbara
