Re: [Oe List ...] Being Black in the Order Ecumenical
Thank you, Marilyn. I was horrified this morning to find myself thinking, "What about a discussion on being a woman in the Order? A child? It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. We had a one year discussion of being a child in the order and the discussion is ongoing. Here's my problem. I am sharing about people I dearly love, people who changed my life. And believe me their blackness was not incidental to me or to them. No one is suggesting a series of these conversations, but if anyone wants to shift to women or Indians (North Ameican or Indian), I don't have a problem with that. So Far, we have hit the objective level (naming Black Order Colleagues) with some 1 person reflections or reminincing about an individual our two. Naming "women" or "children" of the Order feels like a different animal, ballgame, kettle of fish. Lists won't convey much to me. Although I do remember enjoying saying Yes to the question: Did you grow up in the Order? My fuller answer was "Yes, but I was 20 when I joined." Not for me. These names evoke multiple levels of awareness and consciousness for me. They are sacred. I think it's not easy (esp by email) to convey the mystery of the memory of certain individuals and the way they moved into and through our lives. I know when this thread began, I felt a tug of concern for naming names but then felt a rush of gratitude to say and write names and read others' stories. So, here's to remembering the way some people gave of their lives for a short or long time, and for the renewal that happened in the process, or didn't.
