Re: [Oe List ...] A Mini-Library for a 21st Century Spirit Movement
Will respond but may take a week or so. I received an email from Gene and he said he was developing a list for descendants of Joe Matthews. That casts some light on why he chose the books he did. I looked at the heading "A Mini-Library for a 21st Century Spirit Movement" and didn't see that as calling for books from our people but rather as books we would choose if we were again going to build the essential library for a 21st Century Spirit Movement. So when I respond I will be thinking about the books that have come to mean a lot to me and guide me in the 21st century. I would be interested in what you and others would put on such a list. So also please send the names of a few books you would put on the list. Does anyone have the list of the 20 or so books we said were the key books back in the 60s? Please send it out. I suggest that everyone put up books on this list and we will collect them. In true Order fashion, it would be helpful if you not only give a book, but maybe a short description of what is in it, why it is important for you and how it has impacted your life, and why you believe it is a key book for a 21st century spirit movement. You might also say what you think a 21st century spirit might be. Would it be fair to say that our spirit movement was Christian, we called everyone to renew their churches, go on an internal spirit journey, become detached from their possessions, and either work in a local church parish to bring about social justice or join the order? If that's not a good description of what it was, offer your description of EI's 20th century spirit movement. (I don't think ICA talked about a "spirit movement did it, if so amend to include ICA's 20th century definition.) It's interesting how we thought our context--all the world's people-was completely comprehensive, and we actually left out all of nature, and maybe a lot of the world's people, such as homosexuals. What do you think? Well, we're getting old. We can think back and reflect on these things, and maybe in doing so, we can start something new. Who knows? The Joseph Campbell/Bill Moyers book is The Power of Myth. Another of Campbell's books that I would include is The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Also,Global Mind Change by Willis Harman, Leadership and the New Science by Margaret Wheatley, The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge and Stewardship:Choosing Service Over Self-Interest by Peter Block. There probably should be something on the list about Servant Leadership. Robert Greenleaf gets credit for having coined the phrase, but in my opinion others have written on the subject more lucidly than he did. I would also include Education for Critical Consciousness by Paulo Friere and I and Thou by Martin Buber. These last two, written in the early or mid-20th Century, are both pretty timeless.
