That’s all I know. It came through a colleague that is in touch with Gene/Joyce Marshall. In the Directory he is listed living in Bonham, TX—outside Dallas. No life has yet been lived without immense courage. ❤ Frank

Dear Frank, and others who knew and deeply respected John Howell, as Joe and I have, It must be THE John Howell to whom you refer, since you mentioned Heather, his daughter, who for at least three years was like a “big sister” to our twins when they were toddlers and then in pre-school at the NY Religious House. I hope you, or others, can share more with all of us about John’s recent points of engagement and how he has lived out a full and meaningful life since he was a central part of our community at the NY RH, 49 Claremont Ave, NYC. John was one of the most lucrative “permeators” in the NYRH in the early 70s, as an employee of the Bank of Montreal. Moreover, he was the first up every day, rang the bell and announced “Praise the Lord, Christ is Risen!”, and was one of the last to turn in, because he was a key member of the House Priors, our leadership quatrain that had responsibility for guiding the internal and external mission of a then 50-member Religious House. John brought left-brain analysis and critical, conservative review to RH deliberations, as well as sensitive, compassionate understanding. Somehow, he figured out how to keep each in balance, and our community benefitted. When Joe and I learned that John had decided to leave the Order and become part of Gene Marshall’s community, we rejoiced that he continued in meaningful, disciplined service. After the OE Diaspora, and when we (the Crockers) moved to Maine, Joe, and other OE colleagues, Don Clark and David Morton, attended a program in Bonham, Texas, and delighted in re-connecting with John. At this time of John’s passing, Joe and I send our condolences to Heather and her brother Drew; to their Mom, Melinda; and to any of John’s grandchildren. We join with you all in celebrating the completed life of a courageous, generous-spirited, “revolutionary” conservative, who, we believe, deeply loved the Church and embraced radical possibility, frequently at great cost to himself. We believe John Howell was, unquestionably, a Good Man. Grace. . . . out of the blue, we had not spoken in 5 years or more. What a treat, sort of a fount of blessing . . . We talked of many things, it was like my ear was dying of thirst, starved for the sounds of that voice. After 40 minutes or so, I gave the phone to my wife and she, too, took in the glory of it. Among many things, we talked of Meg Wheatley, and the recent study group on So Far From Home . . . Interestingly, this is one of Meg's prescriptions for us as warriors of the human spirit. Ah YES! Mary Laura Jones and Ken Otto treated us to a visit here in Altamont this past weekend, and it was full of glory for us too, as well as the opportunity to celebrate Hannah Otto's graduation from nearby Bard College which Ken attended on Sat. while Mary Laura, Dick and myself feasted with many of our friends with a pot luck supper. I got the chance to read the Conclusion of THIS CHANGES EVERY THING by Naomi Klein, which they had with them, as a result of ICA board's study (led by Karen Troxel) at their recent board meeting...another possibility for our Fall Study Group to consider. Karen also did a chart of the book. Ellen ' On May 19, 2015, at 11:20 AM, James Wiegel wrote:
