art form conversation - election day
Hi everyone, I teach a Leadership Studies class at a Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design - traditional age students getting their degree in fine arts. I'm thinking tomorrow's class will be an art form conversation on their experience of Tuesday. I'd be very interested in this groups wisdom and suggestions for questions and format. I have introduced them to the ORID method and facilitated conversations is already an established norm. What do you think? Grace and Peace, David Flowers "Whatever the problem, community is the answer. There is no power greater than a community discovering what it cares about." Margaret Wheatley
David, I think that will be a great conversation! I would hope you would drill down at the “I” level on what it would take to heal and proceed creatively. It is their future and they need to be creative, not just angry or discouraged. Please share with us what you learn. Grace & Peace, Jack

I second Jack's response! Now is the time for all OE/ICAToP Trainers to tap into their vast resources and contact everyone they know in local/state/federal politics and present proposals for training in basic methods -- focused conversation, consensus workshop, action plan -- as well as strategic planning, etc. . We need to do everything we can to make this President the best he can be -- our children's and grandchildren's futures depend on us showing the way. I keep a cartoon on my desk depicting a cat with its tail in its mouth. The cat is reading a book entitled "You've Caught Your Tail: Now What?" That's a perfect question for Republicans, whether primarily Trump supporters or Clinton haters. It's also a good question for Democrats, whether primarily Clinton supporters or Trump haters. There seems to be enough hatred and fear of the Other to go around. As the sensitive and responsive Ones, our job is to "increase the love of God and Neighbor" to quote H.R, Niebuhr. Recalling this is helping me deal with the regrets about yesterday and trying to avoid finding fault and placing blame. The Mystery has struck again! Now what? Jo Nelson has shared this several times in different venues. Might be a helpful start in creating the conversation. DEBRIEFING A TRAUMATIC SITUATION A Focused Conversation Situation: A traumaticincident has just happened. Theimmediate incident is over, but people are shaken and need to talk about whathas happened. Rational Aim: To talk about their personal experiences of the trauma. To face reality and begin to deal with it productively. Experiential Aim: To move from shock to beginning to come to terms with thesituation. Opening: This event hasshaken all of us. Let¹s take a littletime to reflect on what¹s happened, so we can come to terms with it. I¹m going to ask some questions that willhelp us gradually process what happened. I would like you to let everyone have their own answers ‹ nointerrupting, arguing, or judging what anyone says. Objective Questions Ø Imagine youwere a video camera recording what you saw happening on that day. What actions, words, phrases, objects, andscenes are recorded on your tape? Let¹sget everything out so we all have a full picture of what happened. Ø What has happenedsince? Reflective Questions Ø What shockedyou? Ø What was mostfrightening? Ø What made youwant to escape? Ø How else didyou find yourself reacting? Ø Any place youwanted to cheer? Interpretive Questions Ø Why do youthink this happened? Ø What might havebeen some other contributing factors? Ø What impactdoes it have on you? Ø How are youdifferent now? Ø How might we bedifferent a year from now? Ø What can welearn from this? Decisional Questions Ø What can we doto prevent this from happening again? Ø Who else do youneed to see or talk with? Ø What can we doto help each other now? Ø What can we doto symbolize how we changed or what we have learned? Closing We will undoubtedly continue to reflect on this. If you need help, please be sure to ask forit. Hints Some of these questions are difficult to answer, so if there arefew spoken answers, don¹t worry. Thevery fact of raising these questions and following this flow allows deeperreflection later. Nothing that happened over the last couple of days will influence my engagement in my local community. I'll continue to do what I've been doing. However, if Trump follows through with all, or even some, of his threats some vulnerable people are going to be hurt, and eventually all of us will be negatively impacted in one way or another. One of the things he appears not to know is how interrelated everything is in our networked world. Therefore he has no way to assess the systemic consequences of his actions. Greetings to all: Certainly I have experienced a feeling of being personally attacked by the outcome of our democratic process. By taking a deep breath, stepping back, and remembering our constitutional process is not a winner take all outcome, I have found some perspective.. The question we answered on Tuesday--I think could be stated as -- who do most of us think will be best for all of us as President for the next four years? We did have a somewhat disruptive, way too long discussion, ending with yesterdays results. However, we are all on the same team. Rather than a competition between teams, I find a helpful perspective to think of it as choosing the best quarterback for our one team. Unfortunately we have no way of knowing whether the most of us made the best choice until four years have past;. As John points out, our task, (should we not perish, {wistful smile}) is to increase the love of God and neighbor. Strangely the same task if Hillary had been elected. My wife and I are fond of Aaron Sorkin's works and re-watched The West Wing as a way of keeping our spirits up this past year. We also watched his show The Newsroom where the point is made that not all issues have two sides. There are not two sides -- journalistically-- to the devastation of a hurricane. I believe some of the media sources I trust the most mistook giving equal coverage to Trump and Hillary with finding matching faults. Trump's record -- for instance his impending court appearance-- "There are actually two pending federal suits: the one set for trial this month involves Trump University students from California, Florida and New York, addressing claims that the program violated those states’ tough laws against defrauding consumers and the elderly. The other case is national in scope and invokes a federal racketeering statute. [ http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/donald-trump-court-university-231082]--has no other side to it, cannot be equated as the second side to anything Hillary has done or is facing. And still, we are provided a fresh moment to be about the increase of love of God and our neighbor. Certainly standing in our tradition, we will recognize our neighbor as those in need of feeding, clothing, healing, and especially visiting in prison.{sly smile} May we reveal grave ever more abundant!
