Dear Geoffreys,Elena and Stuart, My heart is hurting by this news. What a woman!! Maybe a story of the Maliwada days will be welcomed. Roxana (Roxxy!) was the bookkeeper for the HDP. Stipend money was always in short supply. Gordon had his pipes and tobacco, but Roxane had her hamburgers! There was a place in Aurangabad that made a delicious one and you could find her sitting there with that and some fries. Every so often the temptation would hit me as well and I could always find her there to share a meal together. A bit of “home” in the no-where of Maliwada. She also only bought one train ticket that she would flash to the TC (Ticket Collector) when they did their occasional passenger checks for ticketless travelers. She always said, “No, don’t punch it, I need to transfer at Manmad to catch the train to Aurangabad.”. It was a late night train and always crowded so no TC’s were on that train, especially in the Ladies Only Car. She has joined Gordon and the rest of us “Blues”, who are waiting for us. Dear Geoffrey, Stuart, and Elena, Larry and Evelyn Philbrook arrived in Taiwan after those great years in Kenya and I can still remember giving some youth, of which Stuart was one, our coveted bottles of soy sauce, ketchup, and the mustard went to Andrew Knutson, as I recall. This was just as we were leaving and packed up to go to Nairobi and the airport to leave Kenya. Lela was a baby in a kanga on my back, Lloyd was always running from place to place staying out of the reach of the Wiegel twins in Kamweleni. We went to the Philippines, and then Malaysia and lived and worked with Gordon in Taiwan. I, Evelyn, got a job at Taipei American School. Someone came and told me that Roxanna worked in HR office and has many friends upstairs. After settling in to my job at TAS after a month, I received a call from the Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Weislow through his secretary, Sandy. She said you know Roxanne right? Yes. However I have never worked with her directly. Your husband is with ICA Taiwan right and works with her husband Gordon? Yes. Okay so Mr. Weislow has a question for you. “What is your mission in Taiwan?” That was 1991. So her memory still lives on with those people who worked with her in TAS, even when she had gone. I am retired from TAS, 2016, but this just shows the impact of who she was when she cared for people, or that would not have come up. We knew your Dad and Mom in the Cleveland Region, after their India days, where they helped ground our care in meaningful service. Norm always knew when the Harpers had joined our Metro Cadre for planning since the smoke of your Dad's pipe would linger for a few days! Your Mom continues to send Christmas cards in her thoughtful, lighthearted way. Norm passed peacefully on Good Friday and I have found that meaningful care and comfort show up in unexpected ways even in these disrupted times. May you be blessed in your grieving and celebrating. Raxana was a cheerful presence.
