Funeral of Stephen Evans 30 August 2013 13:15
Dear Colleagues, Stephen Evans died a few days ago, much too young. He had colon cancer. He was the Welshman in the trio with Frank Little and Alan Berresford who joined us around the same time in the UK - in 1973 or there-abouts. He played a key role in starting the HDP project in Tairgwaith. I recall that there was a car accident in which he was involved and that he moved on. Some said that we weren't at our best around that issue with him. I am glad Frank Little has been in touch with him, even 10 days ago. He is planning to attend the funeral, in some way representing all of us. I remember the beauty of his Welsh voice. Hi Paul! Thanks for this message. Unfortunately I cannot call Stephen up in my memory. Perhaps I did not know him. I left the U K in late 1972. Anyway, glad you sent this. I hope there is a significant celebration of his life. Charles On Wed, Aug 21, 2013 at 11:22 AM, Hampton, Stuart <shampton@hoovers.com> wrote:

Paul, Thanks for passing along this sad news. I remember Stephen very well. He and I were part of the team that went to, I'm sure, every village in Wales looking for an HDP site, towns whose names only Stephen could pronounce correctly. I loved to hear him talk. When we found Tairgwaith (there should be some apostrophes in the spelling of the name) one of the first things we learned was that the membership of the local "working men's club" (pub) was larger than the population of the whole village. I also learned that almost 99% of the people in Wales are named either Evans, Davies or Williams. We stayed with two different Williams families during that time, and both treated me like the prodigal son returned home. I will not forget Stephen Evans who symbolized for me and others what it meant to be a true Welshman. Dear Paul, I remember Steve from when we were in Glasgow and he was part of the Bristol house, looking for a HDP site in Wales. I remember that we were “not at our best” when he had the accident, in which I believe he was quite seriously injured as well. I never understood that, and was deeply sorry when he felt he could not participate any longer. I will forward your email to David Cunningham who was part of that project. Thanks for the information. Mike Shaw just reminded me that Michael Neat was in that trio. And he was the third partner in the serious letter writing I remember. Frank, do you have an address for Michael Neat and Elizabeth Hughes, or does anyone else reading this? Thank you, dear Paul, for allowing some of us who never knew Stephen -- nor had the good fortune to hear his voice -- stop and honor the gift his life must have been to so many. I fell in love with the matchless sound of Welch Male Singers when I watched a rerun of that old movie, How Green is My Valley back in the ‘80s. Upon hearing my enthusiastic expostulations re: that musical genre, Bill Edwards was kind enough to send me a tape of even more extensive samples of that hauntingly beautiful music, and now I have several CDs. I trust that music will abound at the celebration of Stephen Evans’ Completed Life.
