At one time I had a framed photo of Jordan Ensinger being held up and pointing to the Loisaida street sign. I thought I gave it to the archives. If it isn't there it could be in storage. I'm pretty sure George Ensinger took the photo, so if I cannot find mine he might still be able to locate it. Loisaida is the spainglish word for "Lower East Side". It is a project in lower Manhattan from 14th Street to Houston St. and from Avenue A to the East River. The project was led by a group of community residence and ICA affiliated colleagues. That group was called Challenge (for Those Who Dare). Challenge's initial members were Dora Collazo-Levy, Sara Philips and Sr. Elizabeth Kelliher. The group grew to include many more. They met every Wed. evening at the NY House in Loisaida for planning and study. Some of the Loisaida accomplishments/services were:
*NENA Health clinic on 3rd St between Ave B and Ave. C.
* Loisaida Employment Project , where we worked with a number of community members to train them in how to go to job interviews; matched up job openings with community members and went to their apartments early in the morning once they got jobs to make sure that they were up and getting dressed for work. (That was a challenge for me because I am not a morning person, at all, either!)
* After School program for over 200 (up to 250) neighborhood children
* The NY House also hosted many trainings and planning sessions for Loisaida community members.
* Getting the City of New York to rename Avenue C to Loisaida Ave. (there are pictures of this in the archives)
There were other accomplishments/activities, but these are some highlights that immediately come to mind.
It was a great time and the community fought valiantly to keep NYU from encroaching on the neighborhood as the university was massively expanding.
