Surgeon Generals Parting remarks
Dr. Vivek Hallegere Murthy’s tenure as US Surgeon General (since 2021, although he was also Surgeon General from 2013-2017) on January 7, 2025, wrote: “My Parting Prescription for America” which is “Community as the Formula for Fulfillment”. His description of the importance of community speaks to my heart. I wonder how his message can make an impact on the problems he identifies. Dear Karen, Thanks for sharing this article. Volunteers and volunteering are still essential to the life of rural villages, where I have lived over the past 32 years. And now, at 82 and moving back to the city, I continue to find voluntary engagement - the board of Theatre Kingston, the promotion of weekly rock & roll music for seniors, to name two. At the beginning of COVID, in Sharbot Lake I initiated a village campaign to welcome newcomers fleeing the cities. By and large, volunteering wasn’t their default setting. Yet for the rural service clubs, churches, and community associations - with their aging membership, that was the moment to be open and supportive of strangers joining. Those groups that were ‘open minded’ and acted open, grew. How to make that national policy? Love, Ken

Reminds me of the quote from Margaret Wheatley: “Whatever the problem, community is the answer. Randy

Karen, I am glad you caught this. I had previously read of Murthy’s prescription, and noted it, but then did nothing with it. You shared it with our community and “That made all the difference.” Thank you. In addition to his community solution Murthy "identified three core pillars that help people build community: relationships, service, and purpose.' He also offered his perspective on the root causes of widespread pain and unhappiness he has too across America. This is a paraphrase of some of what he offered. people feel alone and isolated, they didn’t have anyone to rely on, the relationships we create require daily effort and depend on individual action. the courage to be vulnerable and real with each other participating in service work, reminds people of the value they bring to the world. having an overarching life aim that guides and prioritizes our decisions and actions How unfortunate that he is leaving office. We could use more of him. Ruth

Thanks, Karen for forwarding this article. Decades ago, in videos and books about Mother Teresa, who worked with the poorest of the poor in Kolkata, she said that when she came to the US she witnessed a greater poverty than she experienced in India--the poverty of loneliness and lack of community. She added that even the poor in India have community. One other comment. Early in the development of Project Vida, we were asking neighbors in the community that had asked us to come in what they thought of as a ‘healthy place to live.’ They answered – almost unanimously – a place where people greet each other.
