May You Feel Blessed in This Holiday Season
The year 2021 brings dual celebrations of 100 years since the ICA GreenRise building was constructed and 50 years since the ICA moved into the building. The ICA is wrapping up 2020 with an End of the Year Funding Campaign to celebrate these milestones and position its service in 2021. In a challenging 2020, ICA staff strengthened the GreenRise programs, learned to facilitate online, hosted online global assemblies and more. Attached is a summary page highlighting 2020 programs with glimmering visions for 2021. We invite you to continue to support ICA by going online at https://www.ica-usa.org/donate.html <https://www.ica-usa.org/donate.html> or send a check to ICA Finance Office, 4750 N. Sheridan, Chicago, IL 60640. We welcome your feedback and visions for ICA service next year (email karen.snyder10@gmail.com <mailto:karen.snyder10@gmail.com>). We hope this message finds you healthy. And we wish you all the best in the approaching holy days and the year to come. Peace, Beret Griffith, for the ICA Board Karen Snyder, for the ICA Staff and Volunteers
More accurate perhaps to say “acquired” the building. As I recall, perhaps mistakenly, the first of us moved in under cover of darkness early on January 1, 1972. Anyway, Happy Holidays! It was not New Year’s Day. I remember moving in the night and dressing in a half-glass room to go teaching the next day. (I do think we decided to take that day off and wait to go back till the next day, since the logistics of getting off were pretty daunting.) I looked up January 1, 1972. It was a Saturday, so we would not have been trying to go to school on Sunday. I think we may have planned to move then, but something got in the way and we delayed a few days. Sherwood,
Yes that is true. But you have to take into account that a dollar back then was worth a lot more than a dollar today.

More accurate perhaps to say “acquired” the building. As I recall, perhaps mistakenly, the first of us moved in under cover of darkness early on January 1, 1972. Anyway, Happy Holidays!

Kemper wanted to give to us. There was no way to transfer the title without a bill of sale. I believe it was a dollar out of Phil Townley's pocket that sealed the deal. Margaret P.S. I was told at some point that the reason we moved in at night from the back of the building on the one rear elevator was because we did not want to advertise to the neighborhood that we were "moving in" with all our earthly belongings to live there - not just work there. There were 3 showers in the building: one on 8th; one on 4th and one in the basement. It was pretty interesting to try to plan your shower times for when the lines were short. We "built" our apartments out of file cabinets and desks. It was pure creativity all around! Luckily, there was a very large full service cafeteria on the 1st floor. There were many bathrooms but few showers so we built men's and women's showers on every floor. The Guardians inkinded many building materials for us. Jay Antenen Sr. of Cincinnati inkinded most of the walls and the doors for floors 4,5, 6, 7, and 8 from his many friends and contacts in the building industry in Ohio. My room was in a cubicle with Indian cloths over the glass partitions. I remember watching a movie sometime in the next year that was set in an office building. I think that’s true, although it was not so much “all our worldly goods” but the fact that we were living in the building. We, as I remember, thought zoning or something kept us from residing there. That turned out not to be true. Some of us had actual “rooms,” though the walls were glass about half way up. We covered them with paper after a while. The first night we worked hard to get settled in, but finally Druckenmillers and Lazears, who lived side-by-side, decided - To heck with trying to cover the window walls that night. It was dark. Turn out the lights and who could see? The fault in that logic was revealed the next morning when daylight came! Fun to remember all this. It also seemed the building was haunted by all the secretaries who had worked there over all the years before we moved in.
