They stabilized the vertebrae in his lumbar spine and pulled it back to as close to its original shape as they could, reconstructing it with screws and a rod. His vertebrae had been crushed so they took out all the bone splinter as well. He had a second surgery on Friday putting in a lateral strut to further support the bone, prevent compacting of the spinal cord and give space for the bone to regenerate. The surgeons are optimistic that it will heal well, though the bone won't be what it was. They will do at least three days of PT before they discharge him, saying it will take months to heal and stairs might be painful but possible. We look forward to those three PT days to really get a sense of where he is at physically, and what kind of environment will be needed for his recuperation. He fell off a ladder at work at the UW yesterday. He'd been working in the very hot sun on the stadium roof painting a logo and believes he fainted coming down, falling about 15 feet.
