Thanks, Jim, I needed that. Thursday morning I got word of 3 deaths: Carol, Ellery and Margy here in Austin. All venerable, women with full lives behind them and yet great losses. The poem helps. mary ________________________________ From: James Wiegel <jfwiegel@yahoo.com> To: Colleague Dialogue <dialogue@lists.wedgeblade.net> Cc: Colleague Dialogue <dialogue@lists.wedgeblade.net> Sent: Sun, September 23, 2012 2:47:55 PM Subject: [Dialogue] Carol and Ellery and all our companions on the journey The thing is, as so many of you have said, Carol played Carol to perfection. Ellery played Ellery to perfection. With Carol, I always knew I was going to have an RS-1 encounter. With Ellery there was this way she had of tilting her head, forming sort of a smile, and I knew she was affirming whatever was going on and ready to see if anything concrete was going to emerge. I am reminded of this poem Perfection Wasted And another regrettable thing about death is the ceasing of your own brand of magic, which took a whole life to develop and market – the quips, the witticisms, the slant adjusted to a few, those loved ones nearest the lip of the stage, their soft faces blanched in the footlight glow, their laughter close to tears, their tears confused with their diamond earrings, their warm pooled breath in and out with your heartbeat, their response and your performance twinned. The jokes over the phone. The memories packed in the rapid-access file. The whole act. Who will do it again? That’s it: no one; imitators and descendants aren’t the same. –John Updike May 7, 1990 Jim Wiegel Jfwiegel@yahoo.com It may be that we live in a time of collective heartbreak ... the sense that we might not be equal to the ecological, political and economic transitions that are necessary, that our own selfishness may be writ too deeply into our genes and that the future is therefore untenable and unreachable. This is sad and a bit shocking to me. I saw her at Accelerate 77 and she was her usual funny self. So glad to have known her.

Colleagues and Family; Carol’s decades of constant care for all of us both structural and individual is a legacy that is embedded in our lives, even when memory may forget the details. What a blessing she continues to be as we live from that gift she is to us. Carol Pierce passed away a little before noon [Thursday, September 20, 2012] of cardio-pulmonary complications. Aimee Hilliard and Mary Laura Jones were with Carol the entire morning. Carol enjoyed the Accelerate 77 event on Saturday and loved keeping in touch with many of you and keeping track of your lives and activities.
There will be a Memorial Service at the ICA GreenRise Center building on a weekend in September or October. I will post the time and date as soon as the family decides the date.
Carol will be deeply missed. She was a wise and courageous mentor to many of us. I will miss her wisdom, her humor, her gracious attitude and her demonstration of living a great life in the midst of physical adversity. Mary Laura
