John and Anita were some of the first EI people Doug and I met before we joined the Order. We visited them in Rapid City when we were in Billings. He and Anita came to Billings for an EI conference south of town. I remember all sleeping on the floor in a large room – the separate rooms were way too cold that weekend. The large fireplace was the only heat source. They also were along while we Montanans searched Billings for a possible religious house. We found a couple prospects, but that year Billings did not get a house. Both he and Anita were giants as far as we were concerned. They both inspired us and were instrumental in whatever success and joy we’ve had in our lives. Go with God, John. We will miss you. John was definitely a leader in the environmental movement much before many thought about it. And he involved the younger generations. Indeed may we be motivated and guided by his example! When I did, I wanted to share it broadly in celebration of John’s dedication to the cause of Care of the Earth. We can use this as motivation to continue to our work as elder citizens for Environmental Justice in the communities and regions where we live.
