We slept in the attic of one of the few houses with a second floor in Vaviharsh village. This was the first of the replication projects based on the Maliwada model. Most of us were bachelors - Madan Tribuwan, Desmond Balm and six or seven youth from other villages who had been through our Human Development Training School and were now part of the auxillary. A sari cordoned off one end of the attic into married quarters occupied by Tim and Rose Casswell. The floor consisted of split tree trunks with the hump facing up. We slept on reed mats on that uneven floor. Getting ready for bed, I had to spend several minutes dragging my mat around every night to find a spot where my limbs and various joints fit the ups and downs of the floor so that I could get a good night's sleep. Over the weeks, I learnt not to be a restless sleeper - because once I moved out of a position, finding the right fit again was difficult.

Of course as a part of the New Village Movement in Kenya, everyone received a 6’x2’ foam mattress to carry around circuiting villages

I was going to say something about living in a file cabinet room in the newly acquired Kemper  building with two showers for everyone (one on the eighth floor and one on the six floor) but I guess I’ll just be quiet.  As for scorpions I got bit by one in our bed a few years ago and another watching television in our living room.
yesterday I finished reading Thomas Berry‘s book the great work.  in his closing chapters he talks about us living in a moment of grace by which he means a moment when something new has to happen one way or another like when something figured out how to use carbon dioxide or when respiration was invented or the discovery  of the use of fire, or …Looking back, What really was the invention or innovation we were passionate about that led us to coal bin rooms icicle attics and tents in the monsoon? And what do these stories and photos have to say about THIS 21st Century moment of grace??

I Agree with you Jack….we were a “wild caring bunch” and willing to do whatever it took to Care for Others….
Our House & floor in Jejudo was with a Korean family in the village.  We slept on Ondul floors (heated underneath….if we were lucky) and on a Yo mat (80x60 inches) which was just about the size of the room. We rolled it up in the morning and placed on a bench built into the back wall of the room where our clothes were placed. The walls were made of rice paper like you see in the movies and since our room was next to the rice storage room, the mice made their way across our room for their nightly meal. Fortunately they did not bother us as the “tasty” stuff was in the room next to ours that they had to pass through.

There are so many great tales to tell by any of us that I will finish off one more of the many I could tell and that was in Majuro. It seems the easiest way to set up for temporary housing was to sleep on the floor. The walls were so thin where we were housed, that we use to joke in the morning that we sometimes said to the couple in the next room, on the floor also. Let’s see if we can surpass your “mating” rituals and noise tonight….all in fun, I will not share who that couple was in the room on the floor next to us.

All in All….what a wonderful life it was because we were all in it Together, not for ourselves, but for what we were out to accomplish on Behalf of ALL “To
