My Daily Call to All

I have been walking around for so long like that little guy in L’il Abner named Joe bf*stplk (or something like that) who had this rain cloud over his head constantly. Paralyzed by the daily barrage of craziness coming out of Washington and the major media networks, including the Democrats of which I am one, I have been stuck on what action could I possibly take to make any difference.

This week two things happened to shake me and wake me out of this morass of immobility. I attended a showing at the University of Redlands of a documentary film on the life of Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the Farm Workers Union with Cesar Chavez. She and her daughter, who heads up her foundation, were there for a Q&A and to give advice to the several hundred young people who had the same question I had. Much of the advice focused on the upcoming election, making sure everyone possible registers and votes, and supporting progressive candidates. At the end of the evening we were led in a rousing chant responsive chant: “Who’s got the power?” “We’ve got the power!” “What kind of power?” “People Power!” Linda and I left a little more encouraged.

The second event, which I now think of as a Wake-Up Call, was yesterday seeing Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9. In my opinion this is his best documentary ever. Hard to watch at times, just as hard on the political establishment, Democrat or Republican, Moore backs up his dramatic assertions with a well-done mixture of facts and figures and visual anecdotal “evidence.” I was disappointed that there were not more of us in the theatre to see it. It is one of those movies Everyone should see, regardless of political leanings. I put it as the cinematic equivalent of Bob Woodward’s book, Fear, on the Trump administration (which I am one-fourth of the way through).

That said, I have decided to commit to a few simple steps which I plan to take each day.
I intend to write and post a daily call to action on social media outlets to which I subscribe.
I intend to locate and support one progressive candidate in the upcoming election, especially women and young candidates.
I intend to spend at least an hour every day educating myself about further actions that might impact the future of my community, city, state, country, world, etc.

So my call to action for today: SEE FAHRENHEIT 11/9, if you have not already done so.
