What a fantastic job, Beret, et.al.
Many years ago I attempted to pull together the first chronological history (that I was aware of at the time). It was incredibly simple and no doubt quite incomplete. At that time, there hadn’t been much interest in having our history “in writing.” It was mostly carried verbally. However, as years passed, one by one, the earliest people who carried the early history of our journey were leaving us one way or another.
At the time there were only tons of file cabinets and files and no way to really adequately use them. So the chronological history was exactly that – no layout of our learnings, just dates of what happened when. And most of it came from people adding to it, from their memories.
At that time, my experience of trying to figure out what happened when and who was there when it happened, and putting it into some simple timeline, taught me the enormity of what this outfit was really doing in this world; what is was accomplishing, that couldn’t fit into such a timeline.
Since leaving from Chicago for Washington, I must admit I have had very little interest in what has been happening to all those files in all those filing cabinets.
Now, here we have this amazing piece of work built out of the minds and experiences of so many colleagues. Managing pull it all together and to create the history you have, Beret, with such thoroughness of emphases, discoveries, learnings, etc., goes such much further than any simple timeline.
The hours and hours that have gone into the archival work prefacing this book can never be truly measured. Whether I ever turn to any of its pages to use some method of other, this book is a powerful symbol, to me, of twenty years of my life and the life of my family.
I, for one, can only thank you and the others, for your part in offering this treasure.
