[Oe List ...] Completed life of Bev Salmon

After I posted the news of Bev’s death, several people inquired for more data and I had little to go on since I’m not on FB much and was out of town over the weekend.  Shelley Hahn, gathered these messages  below from Julie and Jana’s Facebook pages.  Bev died Sat. morning with her family with her.   John and I talked with Bill this afternoon.  He asked that we help get the word out about Bev and he will share more a bit later.  They have all been on a totally unexpected journey.  Today, they had a Ritual of Closing together as a family with poetry and special memories.  A community memorial service will be held July 6, in their town of Salina, KS.  He invites colleague connections either at their home 744 South 10th, Salina, KS 67401, or on the OE list serve or Phone: 785-825-1221.  He’s having a bit of trouble with his e-mail, but thinks he can get to the OE list.  Julie Salmon Gregg and Jana Salmon Lamb are also listed in the Directory.

We celebrate with this family the life of service that Bev lived for her family, the church, the community and the world. Bill and Bev were in Korea for a time and also in Egypt, I think, and also with us in 5th City where Bev taught with me and Jean Long, Jan Ames, and others, at Training, Inc in the Chicago suburbs.

Update on my mom:
Celebrating their 62nd Anniversary with a steak dinner, mom choked on a piece of meat.
Unable to dislodge, causing some of the meat to go into her lungs and CPR was started. Mom coded several times at the hospital while they were trying to help her. She was stabilized and moved to ICU. She was sedated so she would rest some. This morning there’s concern about pneumonia because her white blood count is high. But she opened her eyes and moved her arms when we told her we were being chased out for a couple of hours. The nurse said this was a good sign.

Update on mom!
She becoming more alert each day, looking at us or watching the nurses. She moves hands and feet around. You can tell she just really wants to talk to us. You know mom...so it’s hard on her not being able to talk. Dr says there no brain damage but we’ll have to wait and see about function but he’s optimistic. She is past the hump of coding again but dr says he can’t say “never.” They may try a test run on breathing on her own but she’ll have the tube for several days as she won’t want to take deep breaths because it’s painful with the broken ribs/breastplate.

Update!
Boy how things can turn on a dime! They tested Mom to see how’d she handle being off the oxygen. The test was good but Mom was very agitated afterwards. An X-ray was taken to show her left lung had collapsed. The surgeon was rushed in and she inserted a third tube in right in the room. When we left at 6:00 she was resting comfortably.

Mom will open her eyes when I talk to her. Unfortunately she is running a fever and has been retaining fluid. However, The Dr is putting her on a "sedation holiday." Hopefully the neurologist will come visit today.

Update about Mom

They’ve tried some tests to see if they can remove the ventilator. She either can’t/won’t breath on her own. They’ve changed medication so that she’s staying comfortable but be more wakeful. She’ll open her eyes and try to squeeze your hand, move her toes or blink when asked. So positive progress but very slow going.

Update on mom
This morning mom was a wake when we arrived. They are having her try to breathe on the own. Have inserted a feeding tube. Blood pressure is bouncing around so they are watching it closely to treat appropriately. She seems calmer if we are close and talking to her or holding her hand.

Update on my mom: what I'm seeing in her bed is pretty hard to watch. Selfishly, it is better when she is sleeping or sedated. When Mom is awake she fights the ventilator. The Dr says she is doing very well almost breathing on her own. Later she was really fighting to breathe so they are currently giving her a break. Dr is hopeful that her breathing tube could come out tomorrow. Her blood pressure goes super high, but I know they are watching it. It is just a rollercoaster ride all day in here. It is so hard to watch her be so frustrated!

They were hoping to remove mom's ventilator last evening, but she was working too hard to breathe so they decided not to do it and to let the ventilator do the work so she could rest. I see the ventilator is down to 30/ this morning. Mom continues to be very anxious when she is awake, so she still sleeps a lot, but she breathes good asleep. She is good at following directions, and tries to talk. Thank you for all the prayers and good wishes. We appreciate them and feel their energy!

6/12 - Update on mom
She’s been off the ventilator since noon yesterday. Since then she is pushing for every breathe. She takes anywhere from 33-40 breathes per minute. She is just wearing herself out. Blood work shows her blood gases are very good. So the Dr hopes she can turn the corner on her own even though this is very difficult for us to watch. He put her back on meds, a very very low dose, to take the edge off. We are hoping to avoid being put back on the ventilator through a tracheotomy.

Yesterday was a real stressful day! I ran home for the night to take care of some things, and today my mom has turned a big curve! She is awake and talking. No bipap, just a little oxygen in her nose. What a miracle!! So thankful for all your prayers and good energy that you sent my mom's direction. She is even telling everyone how she got an emema through her navel. Lol! But she knows who we all are and where she is. She even directed my dad to return her library book today before it was late! Julie said she wasn't sure the nurse would agree. Mom expressed that she would bribe him!

Update:
Chest tubes were removed last night!!
Mom has the bipap mask off but it will probably periodically be needed again. She has a feeding tube in and they will start some nourishment soon. Dr wants to try to get her up and in a chair today if she can tolerate it. She’s proving to everyone she’s one tough cookie.

Moms had a set back. She aspirated some food, and pneumonia has set in. She is not exhaling deep enough to rid her body of the CO2. Dr told us they may need to put her on the ventilator again. We’ve said no! If she can’t turn the corner on her own they will just make her comfortable. Eventually the CO2 will put her to sleep. Dr told mom and she understands.
