OK, now that you got me started, here's another story from Kwangyung Il-ri.People used to ask me, "Don't we have JWM on film?" My best answer is No, except for the filmed B&W CBS News program titled "The Bold Community" and a discussion Mathews, Pierce, and Slicker filmed for local TV in Austin on the movie Judgement at Nuremberg. It's in the Global Archives. JWM is also on the B&W 3/4" videotape Shirley Heckman shot of the 5th City Decade celebration introducing Hizzoner Da Mayor Daley.
Here's why.JWM was scheduled to give the main address at the 1977 World's Fair of Human Development, but his plane was grounded by fog in Pusan, so he arrived too late and Lyn Mathews gave the speech instead. So that's why we never shot him on color film.Sadly, he arrived looking very beat, and that was my first clue that he was sick. I think that was his last trip.MarshallWhat I learned from riding on the bus from Kwangyung Il-ri--looking at the pigs, goats, and chickens riding with me, as well as all those wonderful human faces--was that I could give up my privileged Western attitude and just enjoy being another human being who was privileged to be bumping along the road with everybody else. And we all got there eventually, usually without a flat tire.

I love your story and pun! Those of us who went to the villages during the 70`s have so many great, and funny stories. I am not sure those outside “us” would enjoy them, but I think we can fill the time sharing them as we wait for everyone to get to heaven so we can march in together, singing of course!

I think it's now more like a suburb with well-paved roads. Maybe even an upscale suburb. So I tried Google ... but wasn't sure about what I found. But it's quite possible that Kwangyung Il-Ri now has a 7-11.

I wasn’t in Chicago that next summer so I have no idea what Joe may have said, but there were some other kerfuffels along the way.  Joe was coming from Kawangware to Rome to celebrate the initiation of the Trastevere project.  He arrived.  He declared that we were not doing another urban project and told us to start making another plan.  That was on Saturday and we had an open house planned for Sunday with more than 20 religious orders coming.  He changed his tickets and left Sunday morning, even before his luggage lost in Khartoum had caught up with him.

It was a steep learning curve.

I remember Joe speaking to us, I think at the next Summer program but I’m not sure, that we made a mistake in our HDP selection process. He said first we tried to do a whole nation with the selection of Majuro in the Marshall Islands and then we tried to do a whole island with Jeju Do. We finally got the size right after that, but it is part of our history in discovery of what is the right size for an HDP.

Jeju Island is transformed, I was there last year but the project itself was closed years ago.  Jeju is a resort island and the only part of Korea that has visa free entry from China.

Our colleagues in Korea are pursing Facilitation and connect with Rev Park and ICA Korea regularly.
