[Oe List ...] A Thought. Sorry for the delay

As an unreformed Calvinist (that’s intended as humor), I am absolutely committed to the doctrine of total depravity, i.e. we’re all of us screwed up; deal with it. Teilhard and Tillich, Bonhoeffer et. al. were screwed up along with the rest of us. Nevertheless vision emerged, and we are thankful for their gifts.

Dear Susan and Noel,

My family was directly affected by the conflict between Japan and our colonial rulers. Several of them died when the British, who fled when the Japanese invaded, sent their bombers to blow up the railway workshops in Bangsar where many of my close relatives worked and lived. I do know of the violence and cruelty inflicted by both sides on each other as well as on Malaya's population.

We should not worry about whether our discussions cause any of us to feel offended. What is important is whether we are willing to seek the truth even if it challenges the beliefs that give us comfort. You may feel the former government of your country was justified in bombing Japan. I do not.

But I don't really want to divert our discussion into a defense or attack against the US. That is not the point I wanted to raise in my email although I admit I strayed.

My question is whether Chardin, whom we as the Order have quoted on many occasions, was the impartial visionary we believed him to be and how that squares with the undertones of approval he seems to display in his references to the bombing of Japan and the makers of the nuclear bomb.

I'm disturbed to find how he glosses over the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He even refers to the "bold experimenters in Arizona" and notes that "they were praying" as they experimented with the bomb. To me, that chapter supports the official fiction of the US government that they designed and used the bomb for the benefit of mankind rather than their desire to dominate and exploit other nations. Chardin's Mass on the World is moving to listen to but his position on this major event, which to me exemplifies "evil", reveals that he is either naive or is alienated from reality. Now I wonder if his mass and other poetry is one of the opiates that religion has been accused of producing.

I watched an hour-long interview of Thomas Berry re Teilhard's philosophy. He said his theology was the greatest turning point since Paul, AND that Teilhard did not see mankind in communion with the rest of creation, but as the dominant party. I didn't state it as well as Thomas did, but you can find it by following links.

Was he not referring to the internal Spirit fire?

Did Teilhard glorify the atomic bomb?

Just watched that very powerful video and went through the links that followed till I came to this very disturbing statement: After the Bikini test, Teilhard exclaimed that the new bombs “show a humanity which is at peace both internally [217] and externally.” And he added beatifically, “they announce the coming of the spirit on earth.”

Would like to hear from those who have studied his works.
