[Oe List ...] Boston Marathon

That's very impressive that he ran a marathon in 1954. There were very few
marathoners at the time. There were probably less than 1000 runners, instead
of 26,000.

Sincerest congratulations, Herman. Indeed, all is possible.

Fred McGuire ran the marathon, I think in '54 for the U.S. Navy track team.
Don't know his time or how many entrants there were. He medaled in the
Western Hemisphere Marathon (Long Beach) that year. I think he weighed 140
lbs. Was 22 years old, a year before we met.

Blessings on all your endeavors,

Jann

I ran the Boston Marathon yesterday. The temperature reached 89 degrees, 153
people were treated at area hospitals, and 8 were in critical condition at
some stage though no one died.

Here's a testimony to the conditions:

"This was the toughest marathon I've ever run, and I've done 5 Ironmans, 3
Bostons and about 20 marathons," said Mark Williams, 45, of Richmond, Va. He
said his time was 30 minutes slower than six months ago. "It was brutal."

I was able to keep running and I also finished about 30 minutes slower than
I had hoped. It was a real mind trip. I didn't really know what to do to
sustain myself in the race. I had never run a marathon in those conditions
before.

All in all though, it was marvelous. One of those crazy things we do for
fun!

Herman
