Thank you for the invitation. I can't make it unfortunately. However ...
I have fond memories of Dan and Phil, Dan in particular:1) Their protest activities doing the Vietnam War.2) A comment in an article in the British SCM magazine in the early seventies: something like: The time may soon come, if it is not already here, when contemplation will be a subversive activity.3) I was watching the movie The Mission. A scene showed some more Jesuit missionaries arriving at the village, getting out of the boat. One of the actors looked different. My heart bellowed (much like Samuel in Kazantzakis' portrayal of him meeting the shepherd boy David in Report to Greco). "That's not an actor playing a priest. That is a priest!" It was his demeanor, his physical stance. It was Dan Berrigan. I used to say "I bet he paid to be in that movie!"4) Somewhere and somewhen he described the various generations of Jesuits: missionaries, community workers, those in palaces, those in the same kinds of dwellings in the street as those they served. He said he was of this last kind.
Best wishes
