EI-ICA Chronological History
Dear Colleagues, With the help of many people here is: The Chronological History of the Ecumenical Institute and the Institute of Cultural Affairs 1951-1988 and Addendum 1989-2016. All of the acknowledgements are in the book. And in the last 48 hours have been a flurry...David Dunn finishing the editing, Paul Noah getting the cover done in the nick of time and Tim Wegner and Wendell Refior getting the document set up on Wedgeblade.net. Since life is a continual work in progress, the ChronHist is no exception. Your comments, corrections, additions are welcome. Please send them to me at: beretgriffith@gmail.com Here is the direct link and an attachment https://wedgeblade.net/files/archives_assets/20197.pdf With appreciation, Beret

This is a magnificent work --pulling together the life of the OE and the Spirit Movement. Many thanks for all those who worked on this! Two things I do not see in the document that are important to me: 1) I remember an Order study of Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed ...possibly around 1971-1972. It was first published in English in 1970 (1968 in Chile in Spanish). Maybe it was not a whole order study? I just remember it having a big impact for me and it seems it was around the time of the Hunter-Warrior mythology, plus or minus. 2) I do not see any mention of the Global Odyssey entering in there...I went on the July, 1972 Global Odyssey --a total of 24 of us, including both of the Hamans. I think that was the 3rd or 4th Global Odyssey...Slickers or Ann Wood might know. (JoAnn Slicker and Emily Wood were on my Odyssey). Again, my appreciation for all the incredible work here... Priscilla, Yes, I remember being present at the Summer 70 event when Don Clark came and reported to all about the trip. Jan and I were on the last Global Odyssey in Summer 75. George and Elise Packard where the leaders, with the Retigg’s and Jan and I as the 2nd and 3’rds. It was especially meaningful because Bob and Kate St.Clair where on it and we had to deal with his wheelchair in so many places, like getting up to the acropolis, and the hotel with a micro elevator in Rome! Landing in Calcutta late at night and going to the hotel on what I thought was the “back roads” (only to discover this WAS the main road!) and then having a rat run between our legs as we went to the room. We could hear them in the walls and slept with the lights on all night! What an amazing trip it was and for that time, a fantastic encounter with the “otherness” of the Globe. Jack Gilles

As Bob Hope would say, *"Thanks for the memories"* and the Chronological History along with the opportunity to participate in building it. In the spirit of local "persons" rising to build the earth, one of the Global Odysseys in 1974 was organized by the Local Church Experiment in Rochester, NY. Our leaders were Charles and Ann Taylor, Carl Stock and Ellie Stock, plus a lay couple. Charles and Carl were pastors of Dewey Avenue Presbyterian Church. Four Albany Metro colleagues, Ken and Dorcas Rose and Norm and Judy Lindblad joined 22 from that church, including 4 youth. Metro colleagues Ellen and Dick Howie and my parents cared for our children during the 26 days we were away. Last May we gathered in Rochester to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of that life changing event with 11 participants and others who supported our dream "to experience the whole world as one". We all agreed it is a daily touchstone for us with Planet Earth. One of the highlights of the Reunion for me, was hearing that the youth showed the corporate slide show of the trip to all Social Studies classes at the High School and former classmates still remember that experience and thank them for broadening their horizons! Our trip stood on the shoulders of the Odysseys that went before us to develop and pioneer this amazing venture. We give thanks for the gift it is in our lives and the chance to share it in this online community.
