Re: [Oe List ...] Carol Pierce
Dear Colleagues, Oh my, the heart fills with warmth and pleasure when I think about Carol, and with sadness when I realise I won't have another conversation. I remember her and Joe from the Academy in the autumn of 74. The clarity of her teaching..the piercing of illusions... shocking moments. I remember hanging out with her and Joe during the summer gatherings. People would gather in their room, around the fan and Joe in his wheelchair. I enjoyed the sparkling intelligence and eyes. I remember the little engagement party she threw for Christine and me in 81, and the fine advice and support in those daring days. I remember visiting her in her carefully constructed flat last summer: content and upbeat, hearing fine stories of her life and current activities. I am grateful she was in my life. I met Carol at the Profound Journey Dialog in Chicago a couple of years ago, in her electric cart and oxygen tanks, lunch and conversation with her. I admired her courage and optimism. Her concern and caring came through in each conversation over the last couple of years. I join in the celebration of her life and legacy. Part of them were just that she was part of the “permanent order” of which I stood in awe. (Guess we have to reinterpret permanent, but I feel sure she was to the end part of he permanent order.) Part of it was her connection to the amazing Joe Pierce. She was always friendly to me. She gave me hope. I will miss her and will always remember her as she was in the prime of her life. Even though my conversation with her was brief, I sensed that she still embodied all the qualities and traits that you recognized in her when you first met her back in the 60s, and she still had a bit of the accent and that little "twisting" of her mouth. I'm sorry you didn't get to have "one more conversation" with her. The first time I went to 3444 (was it '63,'64, can't remember), it was in the afternoon. I got out of the taxi and went through the door, no security then, went up the stairs and the only two people around were Carol and Kathy (now Zervigon), walking down the hallway. They immediately greeted me, treated me to coffee and we talked as if we had known each other forever for I don't know how long. After that I never sensed that I didn't know Carol. She had a way of twisting her mouth and saying in that southern drawl something that would shift the mood of the conversation whenever it went off track, even when Pierce was rocketing off on some subject that was blowing out all the light bulbs. I'm a bit sad, hoped to have had one more conversation. George Holcombe 14900 Yellowleaf Tr. Carol Pierce A person of presence, graciousness, competence, and humor: when we knew her, she embodied those features along with a twinkle that demonstrated a certain detachment from the immediate crises with which she was involved. Her spirit and style will be greatly missed. We join the Order and the family in celebrating her completed life. And we are grateful for the privilege of having known and worked with her.
Grace & Peace Ann & John Epps
