Thanks for the notice, Dharma, and for the photo, Dianne. Pak The was a memorable person whose pedagogical skills ranged from HDTI's to overseeing the construction of the Bubun training facility. Perhaps a good way to celebrate a colleague's completed life is with a personal memory (one of many). When we first arrived in Singapore in 1979, I was assigned to prepare lunch for the nexus with about 12 persons present. I started early and got a fragrant dish of nasi goering almost ready and was proud of the accomplishment. Then Pak The came into the kitchen and asked, "Where's lunch?" I pointed to my masterpiece, and his comment was "That's almost half enough for one already-full Indonesian!" He proceeded to help me prepare what I considered an obscene amount of fried rice, but after the meal, there were no left-overs. After 39 years that's a lesson of introduction into Asia that stays with me. Pak The now joins the great cloud of witnesses from whom we continue to draw inspiration.
