Dear Marianna, Our connections with you and Bill have mainly been during summer programs in Chicago, but we have always appreciated your leadership and the way you and Bill worked together--your calm presence, sticking with the task, and your sense of humor. Then we had the wonderful opportunity of having dinner with you, Bill, and the Wainrights in Ashville and attending the Jubilee Community with you Sunday morning--what a great community and experience--we still have the bulletin. Marianna has been diagnosed with a painful cancer and has entered Hospice at the Deerfield Assisted Living in Asheville, NC. Please send e-mails that the family will share with her to Tricia and Tom atTricia.bailey813@gmail.com. Tricia’s cell phone is 828-782-0644. Marianna has stopped all other medication, so Trish requests that replies be made soon. John and I were never assigned with the Baileys, except at lots of councils and summer programs, but a special kinship developed because of our common Mountain Heritage. They were from Mt. Airy, NC, and John’s home was just over the mountain in Galax, VA. After we both retired from our global travels, we’ve enjoyed a meaningful relationship as NC neighbors again. Marianna’s gracious southern manner is matched by a fierce resolve to be a powerhouse of care and action in whatever she touches. That same resolve is seen in her decision to have no more testing or treatments. She and Bill received a wonderful formal recognition by the city of Asheville for their devoted work with Asheville communities and the environment. I will have to share that article with you later. We send care to Tom, Lynn and Nan and their families as they care for their dear mom in her farewell journey. Marianna, you are loved! Dear Marianna, As I heard this news I have wondered what to say. Then I thought of a Dag Hammerskjold quote that embodied my thoughts of you and of course Bill. “I don't know Who — or what — put the question, I don't know when it was put. I don't even remember answering. But at some moment I did answer Yes to Someone — or Something — and from that hour I was certain that existence is meaningful and that, therefore, my life, in self-surrender, had a goal.” ― Dag Hammarskjöld Your answer was always “yes”. It is so true for you both. But I want to also add my favorite memory (of so many) of you and Bill. The place was Litibu, and the time was our need to place three families in the available spaces we had for building our homes. The Baileys, the Gilberts and the Gilles’s had to choose. Our dear architect, Sheldon Hill, said nobody would build unless they got their 1st choice. Of the three, Judy and I were sure everyone would choose the one with the most magnificent view, high on the hillside. Sheldon started the conversation with us, willing to point out the advantages of each. We knew right away this was our first choice. I think he then talked to Ruth and Ken, but we never knew who was next. The last space was the section that had the least view, nestled down in the area behind Mitzi Moore’s house. Then Sheldon came an announced that everyone got their first choice! We were floored! The three couples never talked about it. But I have a sneaky suspicion that you and Bill just said, this site is fine with us, and made it your first choice. I think that was just a “Yes” to our community so we could proceed. I wish you could see it now! All sites are beautiful, and the whole community shines with the Spirit. Although you never built, the shinning Spirit has a glow that came from you. And we are grateful.
