I still remember the evening we were together when Martin Luther King was killed and how that affected us. Dear Ann and colleagues gathered, I am reminded of how the announcement of death came in my small town in Nebraska. There was usually a posting in the funeral parlour window and then the word filtered out across the community. I've been watching all morning how across the planet we hear the news of John's passing. Dear Ann, We celebrate with you and everyone, John’s completed life. We remember the profound contribution John made to the church and society with local people. We have many memories of our time together in KL and Australia, in particular Cronulla and the Great Ocean Road journey. Ann, We receive this message with a sense of loss but with a deep appreciation for what John’s life has meant to us personally and to the “Communion of Saints” as well. Though he never knew it, his impact on our faith was a crucial at a time when it was important to distinguish between theology and faith. He is, even now, a thoughtful, calming presence for us in these moments where our theology and faith tend to get mixed up and we tend to forget that it is all about life and what we do with the little we have.
