Hello! When Blase and I were recently in Litibu, I was asked by Josh Craver what I thought were some of the key legacies of the ICA/EI, One of my comments was the Other World Work we did. We dug out an early copy of the Courage to Lead and explored the various dynamics of the OW. It was an enlivening conversation! And yes, we saw some of the early papers in the archives. I am now back from travels and hope to check in with the material again. A key questions is how does this apply to shifting the consciousness to a planetary perspective. Hi Jan, Recently the Centering Prayer group I belong to has been delving into World Without End, (first published in 2017) the text of conversations between film maker and writer Lucette Verboten and Father Thomas Keating. In the course of their exchange, Keating reveals the profound influence the evolutionary theology of Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin had upon his greatly expanded idea of God, the universe and humanity moving into higher stages of consciousness beyond the “rational level.” JWM spoke often about consciousness of consciousness of consciousness. I believe our work with the OW in the midst of TW had much to do with this, though truth be, I was too naive at that point to fully understand the relationship. Certainly this all applies to shifting consciousness to a planetary perspective —the union with everything, letting go of the particular controversies, “in order to be no thing.” \ Jon and Maureen Jenkins did the most depth work on the OW. You might find a chat with Maureen fruitful. Marilyn

James, Thank you as ever for this, (and many others) collegium.
A key questions is how does this apply to shifting the consciousness to a planetary perspective. Jan
Paraphrasing from Maria Popova’s Maginalian, https://www.themarginalian.org/, if an ant hill could be used as an analogy for all of humanity, where murder and music get equal billing, where there are differing roles but no hierarchy, the workers have encounters that spread through the hill and influence its behaviour. (I could say that each of us is the access to a hologram of the entire cosmos.) My partner, Mary Farrar (83) and I (81) have an at-wake-up, a joint solitary commencing with at least 20 minutes of silence. These days, we have done that on my front porch on the main street of a small village, when nothing is stirring except the call of loons and a rooster crowing. Next, we exchange our state of being and a gratitude. I got this process from Joyce Marshall many years ago. With the utterance of our our 'State of Being’ we then try to locate it in the Other World charts - the Jenkins edition that I got from David Dunn a year ago. This simple practice keeps our partnership in the lively present moment, honouring our 'two-ness’. We can safely be at ‘opposite ends’. This assertion of consciousness of consciousness, intentionally affects everything we are, together and with others. Ever grateful for the response of others. Ken

OK, so I’ve been playing with the Greek behind the translations in the English documents called the ‘New Testament.’ 1. What gets translated ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ is baseliea Ouranos. The heavens – Ouranos – encompass all of the planet, etc. Baselieia has at its root word bas – which means footing or foundation (it’s where we get the English word ‘base.’) While it’s used for the Roman Empire as well, it has a different connotation. If one’s foundation is Rome, there are certain implications for context and behavior. But if one’s foundation is the heavens, then there are different implications as far as being inclusive, comprehensive – well, you get the picture. 2. The word that is translated as ‘sin’ is hamartia – the negative of martia (which is where we get ‘martial’) but martia actually refers to ‘mark’ as in target. So the literal translation here is ‘missing the mark.’ Taking the hole instead of the doughnut. Living in illusion? Not getting it? Screwing up? 3. Repentance translates the word ‘metanoia’ – literally ‘new’ – meta – mind – nous/noia. New mindedness. Or ‘Ah! Now I get it!’ 4. Resurrection translates several words in Greek, one of which is ‘egeiro’ which literally translates as ‘awaken.’ Getting woke? Another is histemi – Stand up. Wake up, get up! 5. Save and heal often translate the same Greek word – sozo – which is also literally to make whole. 6. Heal also translates the word ‘therapeuo’ – where we get ‘therapy,’ but means to serve. Healing as serving – interesting. Repentance translates the word ‘metanoia’ – literally ‘new’ – meta – mind – nous/noia. New mindedness. Or ‘Ah! Now I get it!’ Resurrection translates several words in Greek, one of which is ‘egeiro’ which literally translates as ‘awaken.’ Getting woke? Another is histemi – Stand up. Wake up, get up! Save and heal often translate the same Greek word – sozo – which is also literally to make whole. Heal also translates the word ‘therapeuo’ – where we get ‘therapy,’ but means to serve. Healing as serving – interesting.

Bill, I agree with Ruth about the helpfulness of what you are doing. It is of course in the spirit of RS-1 of demythologizing and humanizing abstract theological concepts. God is a mysterious power. Christ is a word of possibility. Holy Spirit is responsibility in freedom and obedience. The Church is a group of social pioneers. Sin is separation from others. Grace is an experience of reunion. I’d say ‘both/and.’ A phenomenological understanding of life (it isn’t what it is, it’s what we experience it to be) ‘recovery’ dates recently to Schleiermacher and Otto. At the same time, Niebuhr’s sense of the archaic language of ‘justice,’ and the projections onto a Roman ‘kosmos’ – order of things – led to an objectification in and of the Christian tradition, while universally the experience of ‘us vs. them’ led to the use of most historic religions as barrier defining limitations of identity. Most of the systems of ‘theology’ (probably not a good word when considering the widest sense of ‘religion’) were initiated and grounded in the experience of what we are calling the ‘Other World.’ Experience became embedded in language and language then became an issue of identity and group symbolism – which then became the source of both rejection and violence towards ‘others.’ So awakening is both reconnecting to fundamental experience and asserting our own group identity. Polar opposites but consistently present in most human experience.
