Teaching methods request

Dear Imaginal Education folks: Greetings and Salutations! This is Stu Harper, 2nd born son of Gordon and Roxana Harper, and grudging sibling of Geoffrey and Elena. For the past 16 years I have lived and worked in Kentucky as a guidance counselor for K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing. Part of my duties this year is to teach (1 hour/week) a small class of 7-9 year-old students who have multiple disabilities, including severe cognitive disabilities. Their disabilities are to such an extent that all four are profoundly deaf; three of the four students cannot independently hold a crayon; two know fewer than 5 words (and it can take months of repetition to learn a new word); and two of the four have their own aide to help with mobility and educational tasks. I'm writing to ask for your assistance in brainstorming some ideas of appropriate topics to teach and effective methods of delivery. My prior education and experience have left me woefully unprepared for teaching a class of this nature, and so I am reaching out into cyberspace today in the hopes that one or more of you may be able to assist me in this endeavor. Stu I am no expert in the type of students you are dealing with. But if I had to I would use images, both pictures and/or symbols and single words or phrases. Give instructions for physical response first, (Stand up. Sit down. crawl, walk, jump, etc.) Then with large manipulatives. Touch the red block. Touch the blue, etc. Though I earned a masters in learning handicapped education, it has been a long time. I used the Santa Clara Developmental Scale that was very helpful. Stu, Do you have occupational, speech and physical therapists are resources. They can individualize for each child, would love to know you are open to using their skills full time not just during treatment sessions! Dear Stu, Sylvia Ashton Warner's book Teacher might be helpful. She uses a very simple method of getting a word from a child-a word that is about their lives. Then she writes this word on a card . Each day she asks for one word and reviews past cards. Pictures can go with these words. The child gets to play with these cards by themselves and with the teacher. Stories may come from these. Words are usually vivid perhaps emotional, perhaps nouns that a child interacts with every day. The intent is to link reading and language to actual experiences happening in a child's life. I have used this with children with learning disabilities. With your children beginning with a picture or photo of the word may set up the climate for reading the word.
