I am NOT an expert on this part of the world, but am concerned about how we can revisit the interlocking traumas that create this kind of suffering. Triggering on all sides - and divided US politics - has fed into incredible misery. That's a given. But - next steps? Biden seems to be walking a tightrope made necessary by multiple dynamics; calling him out as a 'puppet' of Netanyahu as the 'master' does not seem to reflect that reality. The unconscionable attack on Israeli citizens came from an equally unconscionable occupation of Gaza and so forth back to the Palestinian Mandate and post WWII guilt over the blind eye and rejection of exiles from Germany. Each violent step - including the Stern Gang et. al. has led to this disaster. But moralism and fingerpointing will not change the reality on the ground. We are living in a time of ethnic cleansing, abuse of immigrants and tribalism all around us. Picking our tribes isn't the answer. Hi Bill I agree that we need to revisit the interlocking traumas that create this kind of suffering. Among the many good resources for this, one that stands out is "Fateful Triangle" by Noam Chomsky. Though he originally wrote it 40 years ago and updated it in 1999, it still reads like he wrote it yesterday. His documentation draws from Israeli, US and UK sources as well as many other. I became especially clear from it how the economic and political interest of the USA and the UK have set up and continue to be very deeply implicated in them. A very interesting and painful read is at the end of the book when he explores the consequences of a US withdrawl from its current behaviour. There are other more recent very good books as well. and as well the publication Middle East Research and Information Project. In the light of what I know from various sources, the last place to go gain understanding of the situation is our media and government sources. This is also true here in Australia. Bill, I really appreciate your reflections on this article. I agree that the tightrope Biden is walking is part of it. I'm sensing that he may come to calling Netanyahu out for his belligerent and war crimes. American complicity to the carnage in Gaza needs to be confessed and our role diminished as the major weapons supplier to Israel (and other nations). I realize this won't happen easily or soon. Perhaps if we have a truly investigative Congress, they might expose the greed of our weapons industry and --at least-- ask/explore what we can do to change it.
