John asked this question: What rites and celebrations are appropriate to a dispersed body? I have to wonder if in honor of the one planet on which we live, we might should celebrate, each in our own way, the solstices and equinoxes. If you can think of nothing to ponder in your celebration, consider that the music of the hymn "For All the Saints" is titled Sine Nomine (Latin for without a name). It always enhances for me the mystery of my many colleagues around the world and all the change they foment.
Hello Margaret, What a fine idea.. I would be glad to participate in such a ritual. Thankyou In peace and love, Isobel Bishop Sent from my iPhone

Did Teilhard glorify the atomic bomb? Just watched that very powerful video and went through the links that followed till I came to this very disturbing statement: After the Bikini test, Teilhard exclaimed that the new bombs “show a humanity which is at peace both internally [217] and externally.” And he added beatifically, “they announce the coming of the spirit on earth.” Would like to hear from those who have studied his works. I watched an hour-long interview of Thomas Berry re Teilhard's philosophy. He said his theology was the greatest turning point since Paul, AND that Teilhard did not see mankind in communion with the rest of creation, but as the dominant party. I didn't state it as well as Thomas did, but you can find it by following links. -----Original Message----- From: Ellie Stock via OE <oe@lists.wedgeblade.net> To: dvinasithamby <dvinasithamby@yahoo.com>; oe <oe@lists.wedgeblade.net> Sent: Wed, Jun 28, 2017 3:12 pm Subject: Re: [Oe List ...] A Thought. If you can think of nothing to ponder in your celebration, consider that the music of the hymn “For All the Saints” is titled Sine Nomine (Latin for without a name). It always enhances for me the mystery of my many colleagues around the world and all the change they foment. ______________________________ _________________

I've been reading "The Future of Mankind" by Chardin http://www.religion-online.org/showchapter.asp?title=2287&C=2169 I'm disturbed to find how he glosses over the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He even refers to the "bold experimenters in Arizona" and notes that "they were praying" as they experimented with the bomb. To me, that chapter supports the official fiction of the US government that they designed and used the bomb for the benefit of mankind rather than their desire to dominate and exploit other nations. Chardin's Mass on the World is moving to listen to but his position on this major event, which to me exemplifies "evil", reveals that he is either naive or is alienated from reality. Now I wonder if his mass and other poetry is one of the opiates that religion has been accused of producing. Dharma, I hope not to offend you, but I would just suggest that unless you lived through the terror of the Japanese war, it is possible you may not really know the full story. I was born in the Philippines during that war, and I have no doubt the drastic and horrible effect of Hiroshima and Nagasake was imperative. Please know that I do not hold accountable in any way the descendants of the Japanese who perpetrated that nation’s war crimes. I have very close friends in Japan—one couple (who lived with us when they came to the U.S. for a 6-month training period with my husband’s company) called my late husband and me their “American Papa and Mama.” After my husband died, they came to the U.S. to visit his grave. I was treated as part of their family for their son’s wedding a few years ago. And I treasure my friendship with the lovely Japanese woman who translated into English a book written by the Japanese officer who hunted my parents in the Philippines during the war. She arranged for contact with that officer, who asked for my forgiveness, which I freely gave. And of course, I adore Shizuyo Sato, with whom I became good friends during my time in the Balkans when we shared a hotel room and worked together during the UN Women’s Conference in Beijing and later during the conference in Japan that she and Wayne organized. I wish there had been another way to end the war. But I believe the action taken was necessary. There is ample evidence that it was only after the bombing that Japan decided to surrender, contrary to reports that Japan was losing the war and would have been defeated without it. And how can one condone the horrible massacres of prisoners in Japanese concentration camps in the Philippines as the American troops were moving in to rescue them (e.g., throwing the American POWs into hastily dug trenches with tanks of kerosene and burning them alive when the Japanese soldiers knew their release was imminent)? The torture and brutality was no less horrific (and in some cases worse) than what the Germans did to the Jews. Dear Susan and Noel, My family was directly affected by the conflict between Japan and our colonial rulers. Several of them died when the British, who fled when the Japanese invaded, sent their bombers to blow up the railway workshops in Bangsar where many of my close relatives worked and lived. I do know of the violence and cruelty inflicted by both sides on each other as well as on Malaya's population. We should not worry about whether our discussions cause any of us to feel offended. What is important is whether we are willing to seek the truth even if it challenges the beliefs that give us comfort. You may feel the former government of your country was justified in bombing Japan. I do not. But I don't really want to divert our discussion into a defense or attack against the US. That is not the point I wanted to raise in my email although I admit I strayed. My question is whether Chardin, whom we as the Order have quoted on many occasions, was the impartial visionary we believed him to be and how that squares with the undertones of approval he seems to display in his references to the bombing of Japan and the makers of the nuclear bomb.

Dear colleagues, Thankyou for the discussion related to Chardin. For me it has to do with his own awareness of Creation and all that is, was and ever shall be. We are most fortunate to live in a time when for many of us in our world we now trust the wisdom that we live in a 'web if relationships ' I simply love and feel awed about being closely related to the stars! Journey on and thanks for the 'chat'. Btw, the Movie ' A Quiet Passion about Emily Dickinson- is and exceptional Film, in my view. If you can think of nothing to ponder in your celebration, consider that the music of the hymn “For All the Saints” is titled Sine Nomine (Latin for without a name). It always enhances for me the mystery of my many colleagues around the world and all the change they foment. ______________________________ _________________

Oh, my, quite a conversation . . . And a pushy couple of pages from the link that Dharmalingham sent re: Chardin's reflection on the first nuclear explosion tests. By the way, I think it was in New Mexico, not Arizona. Dharma seemed to me to raise the question of the real motivation behind nuclear fission research -- benefit of mankind or US domination. Chardin, at the end of that piece says, Is it the Promethean or Faustian spirit: the spirit of autonomy and solitude; Man with his own strength and for his own sake opposing a blind and hostile Universe; the rise of consciousness concluding in an act of possession? Is it the Christian spirit, on the contrary: the spirit of service and of giving; Man struggling like Jacob to conquer and attain a supreme center of consciousness which calls to him; the evolution of the earth ending in an act of union? Spirit of force or spirit of love? Where shall we place true heroism, where look for true greatness, where recognize objective truth? Margaret, Speaking of “A Thought,” how often I’ve thought I love the way YOU think – not sure I’ve ever told you and certainly not often enough! Sunny From: OE [mailto:oe-bounces@lists.wedgeblade.net] On Behalf Of Margaret Aiseayew via OE Sent: Tuesday, June 20, 2017 7:48 PM To: 'Order Ecumenical Community' <oe@lists.wedgeblade.net> Subject: [Oe List ...] A Thought John asked this question: What rites and celebrations are appropriate to a dispersed body? I have to wonder if in honor of the one planet on which we live, we might should celebrate, each in our own way, the solstices and equinoxes. If you can think of nothing to ponder in your celebration, consider that the music of the hymn “For All the Saints” is titled Sine Nomine (Latin for without a name). It always enhances for me the mystery of my many colleagues around the world and all the change they foment.

Fr. Scott Jenkins, the founding pastor of Church of the Holy Family, fell in love, I believe, with the ancient Celtic tradition of Christianity for exactly this reason--that it includes the nature and seasons of the planet. David Sent from my iPhone

The following is part of a Wiccan ritual from Starhawk's book, Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess. The Sun King was born on the winter solstice. "Now on this longest day, light triumphs, and yet begins the decline into dark. The Sun King grown embraces the Queen of Summer in the love that is death because it is so complete that all dissolves into the single song of ecstasy that moves the worlds. So the Lord of Light dies to Himself, and sets sail across the dark seas of time, searching for the isle of light that is rebirth. We turn the Wheel and share his fate for we have planted the seeds of our own changes, and to grow we must accept even the passing of the sun." I thought about John's question of rites and celebrations appropriate to a dispersed body. Why don't we all watch the sunset today' sing a song of "Those Who Care" and consider that the sun in each time zone likely shines on someone impacted by some aspect of OE/ICA's work I suspect that we, with our background, bring wisdom, light and a larger context to whatever groups we participate in. The group that meets at my house on the new moon each month will celebrate the solstice Saturday. I am liking this conversation. And it is reminding me of the importance and power of ritual and symbol. Sarah Sent from my iPhone

I had a perfect view of the sunset across the San Joaquin Valley as I drove home from my writing group. I sang "For All the Saints." Would like to have sung "Come march along and we'll sing a new song", but don't remember all the words. Jann -----Original Message----- From: Sarah H.
