FW: [SCMFRIENDS] Dan Berrigan memorial 6 pm Sunday 29 May Brunswick
From: fjbremner@hotmail.com To: helen.hill@email.com Subject: RE: [SCMFRIENDS] Dan Berrigan memorial 6 pm Sunday 29 May Brunswick Date: Mon, 23 May 2016 20:03:29 +0930 Thank you for the invitation. I can't make it unfortunately. However ... I have fond memories of Dan and Phil, Dan in particular:1) Their protest activities doing the Vietnam War.2) A comment in an article in the British SCM magazine in the early seventies: something like: The time may soon come, if it is not already here, when contemplation will be a subversive activity.3) I was watching the movie The Mission. A scene showed some more Jesuit missionaries arriving at the village, getting out of the boat. One of the actors looked different. My heart bellowed (much like Samuel in Kazantzakis' portrayal of him meeting the shepherd boy David in Report to Greco). "That's not an actor playing a priest. That is a priest!" It was his demeanor, his physical stance. It was Dan Berrigan. I used to say "I bet he paid to be in that movie!"4) Somewhere and somewhen he described the various generations of Jesuits: missionaries, community workers, those in palaces, those in the same kinds of dwellings in the street as those they served. He said he was of this last kind. Thank you Frank. A long time ago, I remember talking to Philip on the phone, trying to arrange Daniel or Phil to come north to an SCM conference in Canada. When the Barrigan's said 'no', I believe that I chatted with Amy Hilliard about JWM coming. He said 'no' also. Instead, I ended up going to Chicago. In those days, Among other things, I was involved in running US Army deserters over the Ivy Lee Bridge into Ontario. What a time. And yes, contemplation is subversive. Ken Sent from my iPad
