Leslie Forbes asked if I would share the following update re: her mother, Neva (Forbes) Reece. I asked if there is an address where people might send a card or note; she doesn't kknow the address but is trying to get it and will share it when she does. "My biological mother, Neva Reece, had a brain injury several years ago where her word-finding and word-understanding is impaired (she has a hard time talking and understanding and cannot read). She also has issues with rational thought and cannot do any numbers at all. I have been her medical and financial power of attorney until she hired a lawyer to remove me without my knowledge as she had done with my eldest brother. She is now a ward of the county and has been found to have pancreatic cancer. I do not get phone calls returned often so the information is sketchy. Doctors have not returned my phone call, but my brother Doug is on his way there for a consult where they will decide to have an invasive surgery or not. She is currently in a secured facility nursing home (she twice hit a resident at the unsecured facility so was moved). Her letters and phone calls are fairly incomprehensible. My brother and I talk it through to see what she might be talking about. I have been holding off posting this thinking that I would have a better picture of prognosis since I have been told it's dormant, but since they are talking about invasive surgery I don't know." -- from Leslie Forbes Please keep Neva in your thoughts and prayers. Leslie - It is hard to hear of your mother's situation. Neva and I spent many evenings and weekends together in Development in Chicago working primarily on funding proposals. From time to time this included all night sessions completing, copying, and putting together final copies to meet deadlines. I enjoyed working with her - we had some good times. She, you and your brother will be in my thoughts and prayers. Sad news indeed. Your pain is acknowledged and received with compassion. Neva and I go way back to the late 1960s in Lincoln, NB. We were a part of the Lincoln Metro Cadre and the Kansas City Region when Terry Wright and I were Regional coordinators. Neva worked as my church secretary at Trinity UCC. We lost touch through the years but she was a stalwart and a strong presence in everything we worked for, and I never forgot the many experiences we shared. I am sorry to hear of her difficulties in recent years and the burden this has placed on Leslie and Doug. There may be consolation in the words of Robert Adams, which he often repeated: “You are not the body. You are not the mind. There is only Love.” Neva’s spirit hopefully is shining through her current battles and will be acknowledged and received with compassion, for sure by the mystery, if not by all of us. Dear Leslie and Doug, You may not remember me, but may remember our name as someone from your long-ago past. Your father, Vernon, and my first husband, Dick Kucera, were both musicians in Lincoln and our families knew each other. You may also remember my daughters, Karen Kucera Januto, and Kristin Kucera. My son, Kendall Kucera, died 3 years ago. I am so sorry to learn of your mother’s health condition. I know she was part of the Institute of Cultural Affairs for a few years, as was I. I am currently living at Songaia Co-Housing Community in Bothell, WA and both Karen and Kris live in Seattle. I have not been back to Lincoln for several years - my 60 year high school reunion happens next year - 2017, and I hope to go back in September if my health holds out! I’m sure your mother would not remember me in her current health situation, but I want you to know I am thinking about you and would love to hear from you about your and your brothers’ lives. Please write if that seems appropriate! I hope you are well. In care, Carol Crow

Leslie has appreciated the responses on this forum. Here is another message from her: "Thank you Shelley! I will try to figure out how to pass these on to her. She said she would welcome phone calls and I will pass on her address as soon as I get it. She is at 573-355-8190. She has good days and bad days. Sometimes her thoughts wander so you can reiterate the point so she gets back to it (I think she forgets what she's talking about). Sometimes she just uses the wrong words. She wanted to make sure people knew she wasn't "the same"" Shelley Hahn On Thu, Oct 27, 2016 at 5:15 AM, Isobel Bishop via OE < oe@lists.wedgeblade.net> wrote:

Peace and Love, MM

I have been holding off posting this thinking that I would have a better picture of prognosis since I have been told it's dormant, but since they are talking about invasive surgery I don't know." -- from Leslie Forbes
Please keep Neva in your thoughts and prayers.

Leslie has shared contact information for Neva (Forbes) Reece for anyone who would like to contact her: "If anyone would like to contact Neva she is at Parkview Manor 1201 Hunt Avenue Columbia, MO 65202 Her cell is 573-355-8190 She has good word-finding days and bad but she seems upbeat and loves to chat." Leslie has appreciated the responses on this forum. Here is another message from her:
"Thank you Shelley! She wanted to make sure people knew she wasn't "the same""

Sad. I remember her fondly. Please pass to Leslie the question I have as a health care worker, “Is Neva “fit” to make her legal decisions, ie hire an attorney and change her power of attorney either for health care or finance/property.”

Dear Leslie, I appreciate your sharing with us, but am sorry to hear of the painful situation of Neva. I appreciate how hard this has been for you and your brother as well. I worked with your mom in Chicago for a while -- part of the "work out crew." I enjoyed knowing and working with her, but had lost touch with her over time. I send my thoughts and prayers to you, your brother, and your mom, for peace and well-being. Someone mentioned your mom's spirit shining through current conditions, which is the first thing that came to my mind as I read your letter. Thank you, Shelley. I'm grateful to have good memories of Neva when we were in the same Academy group on the West side in about 1990! What a transformational time it was for both of us. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. Gail West On Thu, Oct 27, 2016 at 2:00 AM, Shelley Hahn via OE < oe@lists.wedgeblade.net> wrote:
